IINNTTEERRIIOORRSS 0077::Among the many opportunities afforded ASID chapter leaders, attendance at the annual national conference has to be my favorite.Like its predecessors, Interiors 07was held in a “destination” city, and San Francisco - what a desti-nation! Chapter presidents spenta long but informative first dayamong peers at the Presidents’Forum. That evening, husbandPaul and I headed to the Asian-themed welcome party hostedby the California North Chapter, where it was fun to mingle withPresident-Elect BBeetthh MMiilllleerr andLSU professor TT..LL.. RRiittcchhiiee. The

next two days were a wonderful mix of programs: CEU’s were ofthe highest caliber, and tours focused on design specialties andarchitectural styles.

Jubilation, the ASID Foundation fundraiser, was held Fridayevening at the San Francisco Design Center. Despite being outbidon exotic beach vacations, I had a wonderful time with old and newfriends. The wrap-up session on Sunday morning was an excitingone. We got a first look at the new ASID ad campaign, learned the winners of the Southern Accentsdesign contest, and listened to familiar Mardi Gras music as costumed characters tossed beads anddoubloons. I am glad to report that the ballroom burst into cheers at the announcement: ““IInntteerriioorrss0088 wwiillll bbee hheelldd iinn NNeeww OOrrlleeaannss!!””

DDEESSIIGGNN CCOOMMPPEETTIITTIIOONN::Get ready to show off your design talent! If you’ve never entered a project in the annual design com-

petition, why not start this year? Competition chairs JJuulliiee GGrriisshhaammand TToonnii WWyyrree have added a new category for sustainable design, reflecting our commitment to one of ASID’s platform issues. See “InFocus” or www.asidsouthcentral.org to enter.

LLEEGGIISSLLAATTIIVVEE NNOOTTEESS::An important change makes earning CEU credit for LLoouuiissiiaannaadesigners a little easier. Now, any CEU classified by IDCEC as HS(health / safety) will automatically be accepted, says boardspokesman DDeebboorraahh SStteeiinnmmeettzz,, FFAASSIIDD. For questions, visitwww.lsbid.org.

The MMiissssiissssiippppii coalition hosted a legislative training session on Feb.21 for about 30 students and professionals at Mississippi State.CCaarroollyynn BBeerrnnddtt, associate director of ASID’s Government and PublicAffairs Department, and PPhhyylllliiss MMoooorree,, FFAASSIIDD, of neighboringAlabama, discussed the basics of interior design legislation, gettinginvolved in the legislative process, and working with the opposition.

Approximately 45 students along with friendsand relatives worked from 7:00 – 5:00 everySaturday and Sunday for four straight weekendsuntil they had built the 3 bedroom 1 1/2 bathresidence. The ASID Student Chaptersponsored the house and furnished hot mealsfrom local restaurants for 60 people every workday. CCllaaiirree HHaammiillttoonn,, AASSIIDD along with JJooaannTTrraayylloorr,, IIIIDDAA oversaw the students as part of aclassroom experience in lieu of studio time. Ever said to yourself, “I wish my ASID district would….(fill in the blank)”? If the answer is yes, we need you.

In this second year of the new chapter structure, it’s time to evaluate what is workingand what is not. If you have ideas for what would make the local or chapter activitiesmore relevant to you, please volunteer to join your district’s officers for a brainstorm-ing session, or call or email any board member. Better still, offer to serve on thedistrict leadership team – no experience required, but great experiences to come!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT STUDENT CAREER DAY: ROCKIN’ IN LITTLE ROCKThis year’s career day, held on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, AR, let students from ourchapter’s 13 schools learn more about the profession of interior design, draw inspiration from each other, and celebrate theaccomplishments of the competition winners. The light snowfall dimmed no one’s enthusiasm, and approximately 120students and professionals were ready for a great event.

Students’ “goody bags” were filled with items from Arkansas vendors, and everyone took chances to win door prizes. Afterthe Friday night fajita party at Juanita’s, students were ready to kick off the day with keynote speaker AAnnnn PPeennnniicckk, whodiscussed the USGBC and LEED-CI certification. Next came “break-out” sessions on Design Basics, Career Explorations,Green Design, and the Emerging Green Builders’ group. Students had time to visit with the ten vendors who participated inthe trade show (see “In Appreciation”) and to check out the work displayed in the competition room.

Tours of the Clinton Library and Heifer International’s corporate headquarters, both designed under LEED guidelines, followed. Then came the presentation of the design awards, with USM’s VViiccttoorriiaa YYoorrkk capturing the “Best in Show” award.Lastly, the chapter board announced that KKeellllyy NNoorrwwoooodd, of Mississippi State University, had been chosen as the next SRB,student representative to the board.

At the close of the day, several students joined the professionals for the “town hall visit” with representatives from ASID head-quarters, letting their voices be heard on a national level.

CCeelleessttee RRoossee of Harding University, current SRB, says, “As I was inspired at my first Career Day three years ago, I hope that allthose who attended were inspired and motivated to do great things in this semester and those following.”

For a complete listing of the competition winners and more photos of the event, visit the student chapter blog at hhttttpp::////aassiiddssttuuddeennttmmeemmbbeerrsscc..bbllooggssppoott..ccoomm//

Hoisting up the roof trusses. Day two was a hard day.

The 3rd and 4th day, it was all about siding and soffits.

The last two weekends it slowed down greatly and became moredetailed oriented. Painting, trimwork, doors, hardware, cabinets. It

all had to be done and we were getting tired.
