Reports are starting to fi lter in from the Parade that indicates a good time is being had by all. There appear to have been some challenges that will undoubtedly be reported in this august journal but with typical Santa Barbara Region spirit, all appear to have been overcome. The rallye to the Parade gathered a warehouse of food items to be distributed – kudos to Burt Misevic and his legions of assistants.
The dealers have received their fi rst deliveries of non-S Caymans and they appear to be greeted with open arms. If you haven’t driven a Cayman yet, now is a good opportunity to test both fl avors, suggesting perhaps, a short article by one(or more) of our members on the relative merits of the sibling crocodilians.
By the time you read this, we will be basking in the glow of another terrifi c German AutoFest – hope you were able to make it out for the orgy of Porschemania. In an echo of a recently past eff ort by Santa Barbara Region members at the Festival of Speed last spring, I was very pleased to receive a substantial check from Zone 8 representing SBR’s share of the event profi ts based on the hours put in by region enthusiasts at the event. Most of the thanks go to Bob Bassett and Carolyn Ewbank for their eff orts in getting things organized.
Region-wide, we are in an active search for interested members to serve on the Board of Directors. As is abundantly clear, the qualifi cations are minimal, requiring primarily a love of the marque and the ability to play well with others. I am pleased to announce that Nicolas Liakas, the Editor of Der Auspuff for the past several years, (before I stepped in) was honored at the Porsche Parade with yet another award! This time, Der Auspuff won First Place in Class IV, missing the top-spot Heinmiller Award by inches (well, judging is done with points, but you catch my drift). The judging was based on newsletters published in 2005. (This is the fourth year in a row Der Auspuff won fi rst place or the coveted Heinmiller Award.) Sadly, Der Auspuff is not eligible to win any prizes for 2006 – our decision to switch to a bi-monthly publication excludes us from the running.
The big national event, the 2006 Porsche Parade held in Portland, fi nds itself as the cover story this month starting on page 17. Read about the SBR’s Charity Tour to Portland and the event itself on the following pages. Lucky for all of us, the Parade will be held in San Diego in 2007 (and another Charity Tour is already planned).

Autocross: The next autocross has been advertised. Richard Shaw is contemplating two autocrosses for next year.
Concours: Greg Young has put out a fl yer for this event.
Activities: Barry and Val will be at the Oregon Parade this month. Michael Jacobs and Carol Mathieu will take on their responsibilities for this month. All activities have been planned for the rest of this year.
Meetings/Events: Gary continues to meet with Greg Young regarding next year’s concours which most likely will be held at the SB City College. This will be held the second Sunday in October, 2007.
Archivist: No report
President: If anyone is interested, the 356 club meets at the Beach Break Café on State Street the fourth Saturday of the month. Joe asked if anyone attending the Porsche Parade could make the President’s reception on Aug. 8 – Nick volunteered. There is also a National Board of Director’s meeting on Aug. 6 which Nick will go to. The Autofest plans are coming along well.
Old Business: Nothing
New Business: Mike Hodson, James Oldham and Kent Bodin are looking for others to join them on the nominating committee. Gary Gasperino volunteered. A meeting will be held after the Porsche Parade.
Bryce Boe discussed internet security. He mentioned that Verizon customers are not currently receiving our e-mails. He is working on correcting that.
Gary Gasperino suggested that the board meeting agendas, treasurer’s report, membership report, and minutes of the last
board meeting be sent to board members prior to the next board meeting.
Mike Hodson said the Calendar committee will be meeting after the Porsche Parade.
Joe Carastro suggested that the secretary e-mail a reminder of each board meeting be sent to each board member prior to each meeting.
The next board meeting will be held at the Santa Barbara Auto Group on September 6, at 6:30pm. RSVP to Walt Branscome
The meeting was adjourned at 8:05pm.
The board of directors held its August 1st meeting at the El Torito Restaurant.
Present were Barry Weinstein, Gary Gasperino, Joe Carastro, Pamuela and Mike Hodson, Mary & George Barrett, Mike & Karen Turek, Bryce Boe, and Nicolas Liakas.
The meeting was called to order at 7:00pm.
Secretary: Karen read the minutes of the July meeting. Minutes were approved with one correction – the SB Auto Group will be sponsoring our concours for $1,500.00, not $1,000.
Treasurer: George submitted his July treasurer’s report. George is actively seeking to recruit a successor for his position next year.
Membership: Jeanette will submit.
Editor: Mike Harley is working on getting the July/August issue out to all members. The deadline for submitting articles for the Sept./Oct. issue is August 10.
Advertising: Gary reported for Lynn Kuchera that advertising rates for small ads will be increasing. Lynn will continue to serve as advertising rep. through the end of January so as to complete billings to our advertisers.
Rally Report: Joe Boucher is involved in putting a rally together for the San Diego Parade and will not be able to conduct SBR’s rally. He may be willing to conduct a rally school for our region.
Goodie Store: Mike turned in monies to George. In lieu of the Ventura Show, Mike requested $300.00 to purchase hats, shirts, etc.. A motion was made, seconded and approved. Mike will continue to take special orders for jackets, etc. He is actively seeking a successor for his position for next year.

in Portland. Included in that group were
our activities co-chairs Barry (“I drive slow
because I have a TV on my dash”) Weinstein
and his lovely wife Valerie. In his absence,
Barry had asked me to fi ll in for him. Outside
of Joe Carastro, our club President, who
headed up the meeting, and Mike Hodson,
Goodie Store, it was up to us rookies to pick
up the slack while the other members were
away in Portland.
In announcing the upcoming activities,
I mentioned the 30th annual Concours
d’ Elegance up in Ventura (I call it
Porsche Disneyland) and the
Zone 8/SBR region autocross
on the 16th. The “Rebel Without A Cause” run
takes place September 30 - October 1, and
fi nally on October 28, we have the “Hot Run
to A Cold War Site.”
As you can see, our activities co-chairs
have put together a very busy last quarter
with what will be some really fun-fi lled times
ahead. I look forward to seeing everyone at
the next event.
August 5, 2006 – Alternate Vehicle Month
- Despite an early warm-up to about 80, it
was still a beautiful morning to attend the
monthly breakfast and socialize with the
members. For many of us, the early warm-
up was a welcome break from the record-
breaking temperatures many of us had
been coping with the last several weeks, not
to mention the humidity. However, many
members must still be hiding from the heat
as we had a smaller than usual turn out. My
guess is that everyone is away on vacation
- August tends to be a popular time to take
time off .

cans of food. Der Auspuff won First Place for a region of our size, and missed winning the Heinmiller Award by the slightest of margins! The award went to our sister region in Arizona. Congratulations!
Rich Shaw, a long time member of the SBR, came to his fi rst ever Santa Barbara breakfast. He talked about the Autocross being held September 16 at the Camarillo airport. He has a nice course set out which will be fun for call and encouraged us all to come out to the course and put the pedal to the metal! We wouldn’t be sorry! We will have two Autocrosses in 2007, as the Oxnard airport will be making a place for our event next year.
August 12, 2006 - Overcast skies and humidity didn’t keep thirty-eight Porsche enthusiasts away from the monthly breakfast in Santa Barbara, but it did keep people in bed a little longer than usual, as many members didn’t arrive until 9:15ish….
Those cool, overcast mornings are great days for sleeping in! Fall is on its way! Even though April and August are “drive your alternative vehicle to breakfast” months – most chose to show off their Porsches instead. Although there were a few alternative vehicles in the parking lot, I have a sneaking suspicion they did not belong to our SBR members. Some were even showing off their new vehicles – Ron and Charlotte Williams drove up in their brand new 987 Boxster S. Ron and Charlotte have a relationship to our beloved Nick and Olga Liakas, as they are the aunt and uncle of Stacey Liakas Fell. Jarrod Bradley drove up in his blue 968. Although Jarrod isn’t new to the Santa Barbara region, this was his fi rst Santa Barbara breakfast, but we are sure it won’t be his last.
Nick gave an update on the drive to the Porsche Parade held in Portland. The Santa Barbara Region club led the region pack when it came to sponsoring a drive to the Portland area. Region members stopped along the route and bought canned goods – more than 920 pounds worth, representing over 1,100

accustomed to watching, this is good old-fashioned circa-1984 analog fi lm. While camera mounts are a bit more stable today, the image quality (and lack of static common to radio transmissions) really is impressive. Even better is the sound.
The wail of the twin-turbo fl at-6 in many of the segments (each track is a diff erent DVD chapter) drowns out Derek Bell’s narration (amazingly casual considering he is driving upwards of 200 mph in several instances). You can actually hear the twin-turbos blow off excess boost, and the sound of the rear wheels scratching for traction as he powers out of the corners. At Fuji Speedway, the damp track causes him to run wide and drops two wheels in the dirt. The sound of the fl at-bottomed 956 grinding over the striped curb at speed is heart wrenching!
Two decades old, the footage on the DVD is a 4:3 aspect ratio, I watched it without any
problems (and without any “black bars”) on a high-defi nition 16:9 format television and the picture was just fi ne. The DVD is recorded in MONO, but most home theater receivers can simulate STEREO (or even pseudo-surround sound). The resulting video and sound experience was enough to make my wife nauseated as she sat next to me!
Look past the 80’s-era digital graphics (mostly limited to the subtitles as the various racetracks are introduced), and you will fi nd an hour of entertaining track footage that you’ll watch again and again.
Total running time is 62 minutes.
The Porsche 956 was designed in 1982 for FIA Group C racing. With an aluminum monocoque chassis, the 956 was powered by a twin-turbo 2.65-liter aluminum fl at-6 rated at 650 horsepower. With a weight of only 1,850 pounds, the top speed was over 220 mph.
In 1984, Derek Bell (the factory driver who debuted the Porsche 956 at the Silverstone 6-hour race) was fi lmed though an in-car camera lapping some the world’s greatest racing circuits: Le Mans, Spa Francorchamps, Brands Hatch, Fuji Speedway, Silverstone, “Old” Nurburgring, and Kyalami. Thankfully, the fi lm was retained and ultimately transferred to digital. Now, the footage is captured on this Duke DVD!
We have all seen plenty of in-car footage – nearly every modern race coverage includes plenty of from-the-driver-seat shots – but this is diff erent. Unlike the radio transmitted, sometimes scratchy, footage that we are

of our members was the workshop that
occupies about 2,000 square feet. It serves
the repair, restoration and maintenance of
the numerous vehicles.
Dr. Dan Murphy was on hand to give us
a brief history of the museum and to escort
us throughout the exhibit. He knew the
particulars of each car in the collection,
and provided interesting background on
the owners of the vehicles and how each
motorcar was acquired. Further, the museum
is adding another 15,000 square feet of
display space and an additional 15 to 30 cars
will be showcased.
Our luncheon was a picnic event. The group
traveled a relatively short distance along
Channel Islands Boulevard to the harbor and
Peninsula Park. It was a very welcomed cool
spot and provided a welcomed escape from
the very warm temperatures further inland.

for September and October, and everyone
looked forward to participating again in the

Santa Barbara Region’s R.U.F. Committee
(Retired and Unemployed Folks) held its
August 24, 2006 meeting at the Murphy Auto
Museum in Oxnard. A picnic lunch followed
at Peninsula Park at Channel Islands. In
between, there was the customary lively
conversation and camaraderie. Following
are the details.
The attendees included Bob and Shirley
Yount, Peter Stetson, Bruce Clemens, Bob
Roe, Susan Sheller, Andy Gault, Mike and
Karen Turek, Lois Moser, Bob and Jeanette
Bassett, Gary Albertson, Garrick Newman
and the undersigned. Eight beautiful
Porsches transported the group.
The Murphy Museum was until recently
located in Ventura and is now housed in
50,000 square feet of warehouse space in
Oxnard. About 60 vehicles are on display, and
they include specimens from each decade of
automotive history in the United States. As
you enter the main lobby and front entrance,
there just to your right, is a 1903 Oldsmobile
that was among the very fi rst vehicles ever
to drive from coast to coast, San Francisco to
New York. Another special exhibit focused
on the 1954 Packard Caribbean that was
especially built for Perry Como. There was a
1956 Porsche 356 and a 1960 Corvette, both
beautifully restored and maintained. Muscle
cars were highlighted in the middle of the
display fl oor. Of special interest to some

this time, however, the heat took its toll and
several of us simply sat in a shaded area
and replenished our drinking water. Once
again, there was some anxiety to leave the
Mission and head to El Capitan State Beach,
our dinner destination, and site of hoped-for
cooler ocean breezes.
El Capitan Canyon Resort is a funky place.
It has overnight lodging, campgrounds,
hiking trails, a general store, a duck pond
and a marvelous barbeque on weekends.
Tables were reserved for our group, and as
we arrived, we were guided from the parking
area directly to our sitting. Most of us opted
to visit the general store and purchased
liquid refreshments along with the meal
tickets for the dinner. Precisely at six o’clock,
the food lines were opened.
As the day ended, it was very rewarding to
recognize how many new members took part
in this event. A quick count indicated that
one in three attendees were participating in
their fi rst driving event with our region.
A special note of thanks must be extended
to Barry and Valerie Weinstein, our Activities
Co-Chairs, Mike and Karen Turek, Susan
Stone, Dave Mosesson and Steve Mascagno
for handling all the paperwork and collection
of funds for this day and for leading the four
drive groups. Your help was much needed

We knew it would be a hot day when the
thermometer read 84 degrees – at 7:30 in the
morning of July 22, 2006. Nonetheless, fi fty-
seven Santa Barbara Region members in
thirty-one gleaming and gorgeous Porsches
arrived at Sears parking lot in the La Cumbre
shopping mall by 9:00 a.m. for a day of fun
drives and history lessons on the Spanish
colonization of California. The itinerary for
the day included visits to the three Missions
in our county (La Purisima, Santa Ines and
Santa Barbara), and was to end with a
barbeque dinner at a local beach resort.
The fi rst stop would be the Mission La
Purisima in Lompoc. La Purisima is the most
“original” of the three Missions, both in its
structures and the surrounding grounds.
It also sits on a portion of the historic El
Camino Real. The docents lead us through
the church building, the living quarters of
the Padres and Spanish soldiers, the kitchens
and the gardens. All attendees regrouped at
the end of their respective tours in front of
the church’s bell tower, a structure striking
in its architectural appeal as well as its
salmon colored walls. As if by cue, the bells
starting ringing. This turned out to be a most
appreciated photo opportunity and an omen
of good luck.
We left La Purisima just after noon, and
headed into the town of Solvang for our lunch
stop. Most of us parked at the Mission Santa
Ines and walked into town. By two o’clock, all
had reassembled at the Mission Santa Ines
and embarked upon a self-guided tour of the
Mission buildings and grounds. By departure
time at 2:30, the temperature had climbed to
108 degrees. When we reached the junction
of Hwy 246 with Hwy 154, the temperature
gauge read 112! It was so unbearably hot
that many of the attendees departed from
Santa Ines in a hurry to get down to Mission
Santa Barbara and the anticipated cooler
weather.
Disappointment. The typically refreshing
breezes along the Santa Barbara Coast were
noticeably absent, and the temperature
hovered in the mid-nineties. Still undaunted,

the corner. Waiting to greet us was Porsche
General Manager Rich Kolosky and several
members of the staff . They presented to each
of us with a goodie bag containing Porsche
hats, shirts, tire pressure gauges, and other
useful and interesting items.
Rusnak’s support for our membership
did not end with the goodie bag. We were
provided for our use during the entire 10 day
parade program with a Porsche Cayenne S.

into the drive. At each market, our members
were required to purchase canned food
and to secure a dated receipt from the cash
register. The one entrant who at the end
of the two day tour came closest to the
previously determined arrival times at each
supermarket would win a special prize. All
cans were collected and brought to parade
headquarters where they were donated to
the Portland Police Department’s Sunshine
Division Food Gift Program (in existence
since 1923). More than 1,100 cans weighing
over 900 pounds were deposited in the
collection bin.
The destination for Thursday night,
August 3, was the city of Woodland, CA, to
the northwest of Sacramento. Dinner was a
group event at Lily’s, a barbeque pit in the
downtown area.
Friday, August 4, was to take us through
several small towns in north-central California
before reaching our fi nal destination of
Bend, Oregon
Saturday morning was perfect with cool
weather and several new friends joining
us, the latter being members of PCA’s High
Desert Region. At about 1 p.m. Saturday, we
reached the Red Lion Hotel, headquarters
site for Parade Portland. We unloaded the
SUVs, took many photos, secured our hotel
rooms, and found the Griot’s Garage wash-
your-own-car exhibit. After three days on
the road, this was the perfect way to end the
tour.
This year’s Porsche Parade was held on
August 5 to the 12th in Portland, Oregon.
Typical for the Santa Barbara Region
members, the fun and excitement began on
August 3, 2006 when 24 vehicles embarked
upon a tour – a quasi rally utilizing a route
planned and designed by our very own
national rally champion Joe Boucher and
past PCA national president Burt Misevic and
his wife Marge; they were ably assisted in
the planning and execution of this event by
Joe and Kathy Schneider, Lynn and Evonne
Kuchera, Kent Bodin and David and Susan
Stone. This was not simply a driving event;
it was a charity benefi t. Members from other
regions within Zone 8, making this a multi-
region party, joined SBR.
All participants met in Westlake Village
on the morning of August 3, and each
was requested to bring several canned
food products for donation to the Ventura
County’s Food Share Inc. (A representative
of that charity was overwhelmed with the
generosity of our members and off ered
sincere thanks to all.) After receiving
instructions and signing the necessary forms,
everyone proceeded to the front entrance of
the Rusnak Porsche dealership just around

The 2006 Annual Porsche Parade was held in Portland, OR August 5 to 12. The headquarters site was the Red Lion Hotel situated on the south bank of the Columbia River. Several other neighboring hotels were utilized to house the large number of attendees. More than 1500 individuals arrived in approximately 930 Porsches!
This year’s parade was shortened by one day from previous venues. Still, there were dozens of activities planned and squeezed into the

abbreviated schedule. There were the typical seminars (some featuring world-class Porsche race drivers), demonstrations by vendors, competitive autocross, judged concours, rally, and so on. The lower fl oor of the Red Lion was fi lled with exhibitors and the Goody Store. The fl ow of food and beverages was endless, as numerous lunch, dinner and cocktail receptions were sponsored throughout the week. One of the sponsors, Griott’s Garage, operated a free car wash service and provided its world-class products free of charge; you can just imaging the lines of Porsches waiting to take advantage of the generosity!
The concours was held on a nearby golf course, and there had to be over 400 Porsches being judged or parked in the Porsche Corral. The panorama refl ected a sea of various Porsche models. The fi rst to appear at the site arrived at 5 a.m., and the day’s judging did not end until dinner time.
Literally hundreds of attendees volunteered to assist in each function during the week. Each volunteer (who committed to working at least two shifts) was awarded a bright yellow t-shirt, visible from miles away. On Friday, they were rewarded and thanked at a special luncheon honoring them.
Also attending the Parade were members of the Porsche family from Germany as well as offi cials from Porsche Cars North America out of Atlanta. The latter made presentations on the continuing growth and success of the Porsche company and gave hints into its future development plans. There was also a discussion on the reasons behind Porsche’s purchase of a controlling interest in Volkswagen.
PCA business was conducted during the week; it was not a week for just fun and games. The executive council met for several hours, and Tom Bobbit (PCA President) informed the group on the status of litigation pending against PCA (see Tom’s column in the August issue of Panorama). In addition, there was a private dinner party at a local country club to honor all past and current PCA, Zone and Region presidents and representatives.
By mid-Saturday morning, most of the registrants had departed for home. For SBR members, it would take two days to return, and many stayed overnight in the Sacramento or Lodi areas. Wouldn’t you know it? Although not planned, some of our members found themselves staying at the same hotel for the night. Party on!

to get three ringers in horseshoes, eventually
succumbing to the horseshoe skills of
Evonne Kuchera. Chet Yabitsu showed his
stuff winning at darts, while we’re not really
sure who won at billiards, but everyone had
a great time. Movie tickets were given to the
winners of the games.
Barry Weinstein, activities co-chair with
his lovely wife Valerie, called everyone
together to present a much deserved plaque
and gratitude of thanks to Jeanette and Bob
Bassett for their gracious hospitality for 10
years. I know I speak for everyone when
I say that it’s been a great run – for those
attending the fi rst time this year, you came
at a great time, to witness the end of an era.
Thanks Bob and Jeanette for a great decade
of fun.
After gathering for the annual group
picture, appetites were piqued and ready
to taste and vote! In the end, our top three
chili votes went to: First Place – Suzi Sheller
and Bob Roe; Second Place – Evonne and
Lynn Kuchera; Third Place to Lynn and Gary
Gasparino. The top place winner walked
away with a brand new crock pot, hopefully
for use in a similar event in 2007!

August 26th started out gloriously. It was
a picture perfect day. If you took a deep
enough breath you could possibly smell
the aroma of 9 chilies having their fi nishing
touches added by the contestants as they
prepared for the chili cook off to be held at
Jeanette and Bob Bassett’s home for the last
time later in the afternoon.
Fifty-three SBR members in 29 Porsches
of all colors arrived at the Basset’s home for
a 3:00 PM start time. People arrived with
their snacks, chili’s, desserts, salads and
bread and couldn’t wait to get involved with
great conversation and games, with Bob’s
rules reigning for another year. Members
were able to partake in croquet, horseshoes,
billiards and the newly added game of darts.
There was a great deal of laughter on the
croquet course with two games being played
simultaneously. Carol Mathieu was actually
accused of playing with an illegal mallet as
she became poison and chased last years
winner, Karen Turek, around the course until
death. Karen licked her wounds and went on

September is always an exciting month for PCA Santa Barbara Region. “The Ventura Show,” this year on the 9th and 10th of September, features a fabulous assortment of anything and everything Porsche.
One of the featured events is our very own “Concours D’Elegance,” a perfect chance to show off your prized auto,
with numerous classes that range from “Wash and Shine” to full concours. Even if you don’t enjoy crawling around under your car with a toothbrush and Q-Tips, you can still enter the competition and have a chance at winning a great prize.
Literature show, swap meet, car sale corral, and vendor booths are some of the other reasons to attend.
Of course The Goodie Store will have a booth, with Santa Barbara Region logo and PCA National logo merchandise. We encourage you to stop by and say hello!
As always, an event of such magnitude takes a huge amount of labor, some of which is provided by PCA Santa Barbara Region volunteers. Volunteers receive free admission to the Ventura Show, collectors’ T-shirt, plus the opportunity to see the show from the inside-out. In return for the Club’s participation, Bob Campbell makes a generous donation to the Club treasury.

In the last issue of Der Auspuff we wrote about the fi rst half of our adventure in search of American History. Mike Turek and I made it to Murfreesboro, TN, having traveled through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and the western half of Tennessee.
On April 16, 2006, we started our day with a tour of the Stone River National Battlefi eld. It is located about four miles outside of Murfreesboro and like Brices Cross Roads, much of the battlefi eld is in private ownership and the markers and monuments are limited. We took the self-guided tour. It was the least impressive of all the Civil War sites we visited. By mid-day we were on our way to Knoxville via I-40 and then we headed south on U.S. 441 into Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, TN. The former is the home of Dolly Parton’s Dollywood theme park and the town now spreads for miles with neon lights, fast food restaurants and motel rows. Gatlinburg is a ski resort and
its main street is very reminiscent of Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead.
(It was on our approach to Pigeon Forge that the fi sts signs of a problem with the Turbo’s clutch surfaced. No one in these parts would be able to be of assistance; we would have the car checked at a Porsche dealer in Asheville, North Carolina.)
Immediately upon departing from Gatlinburg we entered The Smokey Mountains National Park. It only takes one-half hour to cross the scenic and mountainous location. It is very picturesque but it lacks the grandeur of the western national parks. What can compare to Yosemite, Zion and Yellowstone? Upon exiting the park, we headed into Asheville, North Carolina.
(We paid a visit to the local Porsche dealer and the mechanic diagnosed the clutch issue as being the slave cylinder. Repairs would wait until we returned home, however.)
April 17 began with a tour of the Biltmore
Estate. Magnifi cent in its architecture, opulent in its contents, and mesmerizing in its landscape design (created by the same person who crafted New York City’s Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted), the estate competes with Hearst’s Castle as the epitome of the Gilded Age and all its extravagance. Our visit was perfectly timed to witness the explosion of spring fl owers, especially tulips, and the visual impact was that of Dorothy leaving black and white Kansas and entering the Land of Oz.
Our destination on April 18 was the Appomattox Courthouse where Lee surrendered to Grant. On the way we stopped at the National D-Day Memorial in Benton, Virginia. On a per capita basis, Benton suff ered the greatest loss of life on June 6, 1944 than any other U.S. municipality, and Congress authorized the erection of the Memorial in that community to honor its service. We toured the grounds at Appomattox and viewed the house where the surrender occurred. We then drove

into the town of Appomattox for lunch. By shear luck, we found Granny Bea’s Restaurant right in the center of this hamlet. It was full of locals. Mike and I sat at the only empty table, and the waitress brought the menus. We looked at each other in disbelief. Full roast beef or chicken platters with three vegetables, home baked bread and beverage for $4.50; a roast beef sandwich on the same bread was just $2.50. The meals were delicious, and we were given a copy of the menu as proof of its contents and pricing in case Californian’s found our tale hard to believe.
After lunch we drove to Charlottesville, VA, to tour Thomas Jeff erson’s home, Monticello. A magnifi cent structure, much of which was designed by Jeff erson, it overlooks spectacular gardens and a vista that overlooks the University of Virginia, founded by Jeff erson. At the time of his death, Jeff erson was in extreme debt and the estate fell into the hands of
private citizens. A charitable trust has acquired the property and now manages it in trust for the public good.
We continued on our journey on April 19 to Manassas, also known as Bull Run, site of two important battles. We walked around the site of Bull Run 1, with special interest in the location where “Stonewall” Jackson got his nickname. Of equal interest was the site where Union cannons misfi red and allowed Confederates to overtake a strategic high point. Historians believe that if the cannons had properly engaged the entire Confederate force would have been decimated and the Civil War would have ended shortly after it began. Manassas is only about one-hour southwest of Washington, D.C., our next destination.
We stayed two nights in D.C., the fi rst time we spent more than one night at one location.
We enjoyed a seven-mile hike along the Capitol Mall viewing the U.S. Capitol, the numerous Smithsonian buildings, the Washington, FDR, Jeff erson and Lincoln Memorials, as well as the World War II, Korean and Vietnam Memorials. Our visit coincided with that of the President of People’s Republic of China, and the streets were jammed with groups protesting China’s internal policies and practices. We also witnessed throngs of high-school students visiting the Capitol on their senior trips. Of special interest to both Mike and me was Arlington National Cemetery where we viewed the gravesites of John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, the Lee Mansion, and numerous other monuments. Observing the changing of the guard at The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier is an unforgettable experience.
Our next destination was Antietam in Maryland, site of the deadliest one-day battle in American history. More that 23,000 casualties
shocked the nation into the realization that the war would be long and very costly. The Cornfi eld and Burnside Bridge mark two of the spots where heavy casualties were suff ered by both sides. The weather was starting to change. We had enjoyed excellent sunshine and temperatures until this day when rain set in. We traveled on U.S. 15 north to Gettysburg.
The afternoon of the 21st of April was wet and breezy, so we decided to take a guided bus tour of the Gettysburg battlefi eld. We saw how the battle formed, stood on the ground where Pickett led his charge, climbed onto Roundtop, a strategic high-point that Confederates neglected to seize, and viewed the Pennsylvania Monument honoring those who fought and died there. We had planned on spending two full days in Gettysburg, but the weather forced a change in our plans. We
headed for Valley Forge, and yet another part of American history. We were forced to tour Valley Forge in the Turbo since the rain would not permit the walking tour.
Now on a Revolutionary War tour, we paid a visit to Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell exhibit. By April 23 we were headed for New York.
Three days in New York is not enough time to fully appreciate America’s greatest city. We walked all through mid-town Manhattan, window shopping at Cartier and Tiff any, saying hello to Donald Trump’s headquarters, strolling through Rockefeller Center, entering Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, marveling at Times Square, crossing Central Park, amazed at Lincoln Center, and impressed by the hometown feeling of Greenwich Village. Our visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art could have lasted for three days. Mike’s travel to The World Trade Center and The Statue of Liberty will long be remembered.
Mike fl ew home on April 27. On the same day, Olga with our daughter Stacey Fell and our grandson Nicky joined me in New York for fi ve days of visiting friends and relatives. The Turbo was shipped back to Agoura via Intercity Lines. Our long journey came to an end.

The Regions of PCA operate on their own within reason, have their own income and expenses with a treasury account and a local Board of Directors making decisions, except they are part of a large organization and are guided by the National PCA Bylaws and must conform to the accepted practices of the organization, including the PCA Privacy Policy and PCA Code of Ethics and Conduct (located in the Region Procedures Manual hardcopy and on the PCA web site). Each Region also has Bylaws which are periodically revised and then approved by the entire Region membership that are used to run the Region. Any member is entitled to a copy of the Region Bylaws. The National PCA Bylaws are located on the PCA web site for all members to read and print if they care to.
Zone 8 has a Zone calendar of events, established each year at the annual November Zone Presidents meeting. With this calendar of events a competition is created with members of the Zone competing against each other in AutoCross, Concours, Rally, and Time Trials. With the performance of events it is necessary to establish Zone Rules to guide the competitors, setting out the standards by which these events will be run and/or judged. These rules are diff erent than the Porsche Parade, Parade Competition Rules (PCR). In January of the next year a Zone 8 Awards Banquet is held which will honor those individuals who have won the competitions of each of the categories of events. Also awards are given to the Zone 8 Region of the Year, Zone 8 Small Region of the Year, Zone 8 Enthusiast of the Year, Sam Wang Award winner, as well as others.
It takes a large commitment to put on and pay for a Club Race. Zone 8 combines all resources (Regions) in the Zone and hosts a Club Race, Zone 8 Speed Festival at the California Speedway in Fontana, which returns to each Region profi ts from the event depending on how much the Region helps in the production/volunteering before and
during the event. This Race is usually held in the Spring of each year and is placed on the National Club Race calendar early in the year with between 25-30 race events run each year at diff erent tracks. Join the Zone in helping out in the Speed Festival and you will be helping out your Region also.
Regions will determine the dates of their Zone 8 events, placing them on the Zone calendar in November, not to interfere with other Zone events. Each Region will determine where the event is to take place, the fee to charge, handle registration, as well as the start and fi nish time of the event, what the style/type of award will be given, (the Zone Rules determine the number of awards given at an event) whether or how food will be served to the attendees. All members of Zone 8 are welcome to attend and/or compete in any of these events. Fliers for these events are in your der Auspuff and on the Zone 8 web site and the host region web site.
PCA, Zone 8 and SBA off ers a wealth of things to do that allows members to choose what interests them. A few of the most popular events follows:
AUTOCROSS – Autocrosses are courses delineated with pylons in large parking lots or old airport taxiways. They are timed competitive events. Cars are usually classed according to model, engine size and other performance parameters. Autocrosses are usually low speed events, emphasizing handling and driving skill rather than raw horsepower and speed.
CONCOURS – A Concours d’Elegance is a car show. The principle object is to show the car in its most perfect condition (maintenance and cleanliness in Zone 8). The six parts of a car – exterior, interior, engine, storage and under carriage front and rear can be judged depending on the class entered. You choose how much cleaning you want to do and enter that division/class.

DRIVER’S ED/TIME TRIALS – Driver’s Ed is an event held at a race track with the purpose to improve driving skills. A driver has the chance to learn the track – and gradually increase speed so that skills have time to develop – under conditions that are more controlled (and safer) than on the street.
RALLIES – Rallies are run on paved roads at the legal speed limit. They do not cause excessive wear on a vehicle or place its driver/navigator at risk. A set of rules and rally instructions gets you from one starting point to one’s fi nal destination. There are two major types of rallies: Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) and Gimmick rallies (Poker, Hare and Hound, Fill-In-The-Blank, to name a few).
CLUB RACING – PCA began off ering a wheel-to-wheel racing opportunity for its members in 1992. There is a formal licensing system. These requirements are set forth in the Club Racing Rules, on the PCA web site.
In addition to the Zone 8 events, Regions set up a calendar of local events however to not confl ict with the Zone 8 competitive events, of types that the Region would like to have. Some of the popular events in Santa Barbara Region have been Saturday Breakfasts, Tours, Chili CookOff , Progressive Dinner, Potluck Dinners, etc.
Join us in any competitive event or social event that is scheduled and have some enjoyable camaraderie with your fellow Santa Barbara Region or Zone 8 members.

We are attempting to get a head count on the number of individuals who would be interested in participating in a Driver’s Education track event next spring. This would be an event at Buttonwillow Raceway (about two hours drive away) for one or two days. The event is open to all PCA members – no experience required.
