Current wastewater and sludge management at HSY

Recycling of Phosphorus in WWTPs in Finland
• Only 13 large WWTP (>100 000 PE)• Total ~ 520 WWTPs
• Treatment plants are build for chemical P removal
• Sludge is mostly composted
• In 2016, 40 % of treated sewage sludge was used in agriculture
At the moment, no reguirements for WWTPs to recover P more efficiently
Finnland: Strategie und Vorgehen Am Beispiel Helsinki/Laura Rossi/25.10.2018
Technologies available on the markets for more efficient P recovery are not directly suitable for WWTPs in Finland
• No biological P removal
• No sludge incineration

Research
- 1000 PE pilot plant at Viikinmäki WWTP- Post-precipitation and removal with disc filter
- Chemical sludge dewatering
- Lab scale- Dissolution
- Solvent-solvent extraction
- Technical readiness level 5-6 (max 9)
Finnland: Strategie und Vorgehen Am Beispiel Helsinki/Laura Rossi/25.10.2018
1. With 1-step precipitation >80 % of P can be transferred to recovery part
2. With optimum parameters, 85 % of aluminum could be dissolved
3. In solvent-solvent extraction 97 % of aluminum was possible to transfer to organic phase

FUTURE STEPS
TECHNICAL steps• RAVITA DEMO plant
• Increase of TRL (now 5 - 6)• Dissolution and separation of
RAVITA sludge into the DEMO scale
• Energy and mass balances• More analyses of the end product
quality• Hazardous substances and
microplastics
BUSINESS steps• Ecosystem mining for potential
partners (out of the box) and clients• End users ideas and comments needed
to complete the business concept
THANK YOU!
The RAVITA project has granted funding from the Finnish Ministry of the Environment RAKI Programme 2014-2017.
The RAKI RAVITA DEMO plant has been chosen as a part of the Finnish Government’s key project on the circulareconomy 2017-2018
RAVITA Process was selected as one of the three winners in BONUS Return competition in 2018.
RAVITA won the SITRA Award on Municipal Recycling Act in 2018.
