Dr. Maximilian Hempel
Maximilian Hempel promovierte 1993 an der TU Hamburg-Harburg zum Thema
Quecksilber in der Umwelt. Von 1990 bis 1996 war er Wissenschaftler am Institut
für Chemie des Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht. Während seiner Promotionszeit
gründete er mit zwei Partnern das umweltchemische Handelslabor GALAB, dem
er bis 2001 als einer von drei Geschäftsführern vorstand. Seit 2002 leitet er das
Referat Umweltchemie der Deutschen Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU), das seit
2004 unter dem Leitbild Nachhaltige Chemie geführt wird, und seit 2016 die
Projektgruppe „Ressourceneffizienz“ der Deutschen Bundesstiftung Umwelt
(DBU). Die DBU war zu diesem Zeitpunkt national der erste Förderer, der
Nachhaltige Chemie als Leitthema benannte und konsequent verfolgte. Von 2004
mehr als 100 Projekte gefördert, die
sich mit der stofflichen Nutzung von nachwachsenden Rohstoffen
beschäftigen,
alternative Lösemittelkonzepte (ionische Flüssigkeiten, überkritisches
Kohlendioxid, lösemittelfreie Synthese) verfolgen,
die Mikroverfahrenstechnik zur Prozessintensivierung in der chemischen
Industrie nutzen,
neue Businessmodelle, wie das Chemikalienleasing verwenden,
sich mit der Vermeidung von Arzneimitteln in der Umwelt befassen.
Maximilian Hempel ist seit 2014 im Vorstand der Fachgruppe Nachhaltige
Chemie der GDCh, zudem Mitglied im Organisationskomitee verschiedener
internationaler Konferenzen sowie Mitglied des Umweltbeirats der
Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung, Mitherausgeber von
fünf Büchern und Autor von mehr als 30 peer-reviewed Artikeln. Seine
Interessensgebiete liegen in der Nachhaltigen Chemie & Pharmazie,
Ökotoxikologie sowie Innovationsmanagement.

Dieter Vogt holds the chair of Industrial Chemistry at TU Dortmund. He studied Chemistry at
Essen and Aachen and received his Ph.D. from RWTH Aachen in 1992 under the guidance of
prof. W. Keim. He pursued with a Habilitation at the Institute of Industrial Chemistry and
Petrolchemistry of the RWTH Aachen and received the Venia Legendi in Technische Chemie
in 1998. In 1999 he moved to the Eindhoven University of Technology as full professor of
Inorganic Chemistry and Coordination Chemistry. He is founding member of the Center for
Nano-Materials research (cNM) at the TU/e. He has been chairman of the Dutch National
Research School of Catalysis, NIOK, from 2005 to 2012. In November 2012 he moved to the
School of Chemistry in Edinburgh holding the chair of Industrial Chemistry. Since January
2015 he also holds a position as Einstein Visiting Fellow at TU Berlin. In April 2017 he
moved to his present position at the TU Dortmund.
He published more than 120 research papers in peer reviewed journals, 14 book chapters and
15 patents (h-index 39). He supervised 23 PhD theses as promoter 9 PhD theses as co-
supervisor, 22 postdocs, and many master theses.
Main research interests are in the field of homogeneous catalysis. Ligand design for
selectivity control in intermediate synthesis and fine chemicals, catalyst recycling and new
materials for application in catalysis, continuous mini-plant operation and kinetics of
homogeneous catalytic processes, C1 building blocks and renewable feed stocks are present
research topics.

Forschungsinteressen Die elektroorganische Synthese und neue anodische sowie kathodische Umsetzungen stellen das Hauptinteresse dar. Dabei wird vom initialen Screening bis zur Prozessentwicklung die ganze Bandbreite abgedeckt. Ziel sind immer nachhaltige Herstellungswege unter stofflicher Nutzung von Strom. Zusätzlich werden neue Molybdän(V)-Reagenzien entwickelt und in der Synthese genutzt. Weiterhin beschäftige ich mich mit der supramolekularen Sensorik, um direkt flüchtige organische Verbindungen aus der Gasphase zu detektieren.
