bereits Klassiker in ihrem Genre.

Präsident Top Events of Switzerland
Dear readers
When the Top Events of Switzerland association was set up 17 years ago by
Claude Nobs and Paul Reutlinger with the aim of presenting a dynamic and
fresh image of Switzerland to the world, all the events were already classics
in their own right. The last few years have seen all of them take another great
leap forward in terms of quality, professionalism and successful marketing.
Switzerland benefits from this too, as a travel destination attracting foreign
visitors to the country.
The eight Top Events of Switzerland are brilliant beacons of light,
shining reliably in the Swiss event and cultural landscape. A firm focus on
development and innovation – without ever losing sight of the traditional
and time-tested values of the individual events – is their recipe for success.
We will reveal just how these leading Swiss events, the largest of
their kind in the areas of sport, culture and music, succeed in enthusing
spectators and visitors year after year by offering you unusual insights into
how these events are created.
Bernhard Russi takes us on a run down the skiing world's longest and
toughest downhill course on the Lauberhorn, and shares the secrets of his
work as a course designer. At the Lucerne Festival, we discover what goes on
backstage when the TV cameras are trained on star conductor Claudio Ab-
bado, and we join the stars of the Weltklasse Zürich athletics meeting in
exploring the symbiosis of "body and mind" – the search for perfection in
top-level sporting performance. At the Omega European Masters in Crans-
Montana, more and more stars of the Asian Tour are making an impact at
the golf tournament on the high plateau in Valais.
We look forward to seeing you at one of the Top Events of Switzer-
land and hope you enjoy reading the following pages of our magazine, which
this year once again features contributions from some of the best journalists
and photographers in Switzerland.

BODY AND MIND
AND THE WINNER IS ...

THE FOUNDERS OF EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE
The Swiss Deluxe Hotels – the 39 most exclusive 5-star hotels in Switzerland –owe their uniqueness to the qual-ity of their service and their century-old tradition of ca-tering to the luxury traveller.
This group – the only one of its kind in the world – unites the 39 most exclusive

Pionieren von morgen in den Swiss Deluxe Hotels – The Founders of
Exceptional Service.
No limits to the service enjoyed by our guestsTrue luxury is to be found – alongside the many comforts and conveniences
such as the breathtaking spa facilities, the seductive gastronomic delights, the
outstandingly beautiful rooms and suites, or the perfect infrastructure for pri-
vate and business events – in the passion for providing each and every guest
with exceptional service that surpasses all expectations of quality, at all times.
A warm and personal welcome from the general manager, the attention you
will receive from all 4,500 members of staff. The little details that vary from
hotel to hotel: the guest's name embroidered on bathrobe or pillow, the 24-hour
butler service, the personal devotion to anticipating and attending to the guest's
every wish, be it great or small. After all, it is sometimes the smallest of gestures
that makes the biggest difference.
Pioneers of hotel historyThe hallmark and spirit of Swiss luxury hotels can now be found at the top ad-
dresses around the globe. Originally established by the great pioneers of Swiss
hotel history, this culture of luxury accommodation and service is being con-
tinued with pride by the hotel pioneers of tomorrow in the Swiss Deluxe Hotels
– The Founders of Exceptional Service.
Karl Molitor put it most aptly: "The Lauberhorn downhill is a work
of God; the others are the work of Kässbohrer machines." The
92-year-old skiing legend should certainly know what he is talk-
ing about. No other athlete has celebrated more victories on the
most famous hillside in world skiing. "Moli" climbed onto the podium in Wen-
gen twenty times, eleven as winner, six times in the downhill alone.
The Lauberhorn is in no need of superlatives: it is a superlative in its own
right. Bernhard Russi, the world's most renowned designer of spectacular ski
slopes, likewise bows down before it: "Standing in the start house looking out at
the breathtaking scenery is a humbling experience." On the Lauberhorn even
the "Picasso of the skiing world" himself, as French superstar Jean-Claude Killy
calls him, is deeply impressed by this miracle of nature that could never be pro-
duced by even the most creative of earthly architects – with or without a Käss-
bohrer snowgrooming machine.

«Widerwillig»,, so Russi,
was allerdings relativ ist.
Nevertheless, even a "miracle" requires a little touching up from time to
time in order to maintain its shine. Thus Russi was once asked to devise a project
to bypass the legendary "Brüggli", because FIS Race Director Helmut Schmalzl no
longer wanted the course to pass through the tunnel under the Wengernalp-Bahn
railway line. "Reluctantly," Russi says "I set to work, but I did warn them that
it would cost a lot of money and ruin the whole downhill run." Happily, the idea
was dropped.
Russi is "immortalised" at another spot, at a jump in the upper part of the
course, the "Russi-Sprung", which in truth doesn't actually exist (any more). "It was
created one spring when we were making a TV programme in which I wanted to
demonstrate the technical
challenges of a downhill
course", Russi explains. "In or-
der to get some attractive
shots, we built a jump - with
the Eiger, the Mönch and the
sun in the background."
If the jump had been
intended for the race, it would have looked different, Russi assures us. Nevertheless
– without Russi knowing it – this synthetic passage remained part of the course
and was once responsible for ending the career of Armin Assinger, host of "Who
Wants to Be A Millionaire" on Austrian TV, when he tore the ligaments in both
knees there. Perhaps this accident contains a certain symbolism. Artificial inter-
ventions on the Lauberhorn are tempting fate.
That's why Russi omits the Russi-Sprung from his virtual Lauberhorn
downhill run over the ski marathon distance of 4.480 km and sticks to the tradi-
tional sections of the course. "It gets off to a gentle start", he narrates, relatively
speaking. In the start house at his first ever Lauberhorn Race he was so nervous he
wanted to flee again out the back door ... "Then you start to pick up speed", Russi
continues. "You feel yourself getting faster and faster, until you're forced to slam on

the brakes before the Hundschopf jump, decelerating practically down to zero, and
you think you've blown it." But, he warns, even a speed of 70 km/h can be too much
at this point if you jump too far over the edge of the Hundschopf: "Having said that,
it's still one of the most beautiful passages. Hundschopf, Mischkante and Canadi-
an Corner leading into the Alpweg - that's what gets the adrenalin pumping."
These "rapid changes", often with different light and snow conditions, make
tactical behaviour important, Russi explains. And unnecessary risk-taking disas-
trous: dozens of crashes prove that point. In the 1970s an entire generation of "Cra-
zy Canucks", including Ken Read and Dave Irwin, were left dangling in the net at
Canadian Corner.
And if you survive that in one piece you find yourself speeding at over
100km/h over the narrow Alpweg, only two to three metres wide, directly towards
two 90 degree curves, the Brüggli-S, which was renamed Kernen-S a few years ago
following Bruno Kernen's spectacular crash in 1997. Even though the passage has
been widened somewhat in the meantime and it is theoretically possible to get
through with two carving turns, the "S" remains the key point in the course. "There
are plenty of skiers who have never won the race because of the Brüggli-S. I'm one
of them", Russi concludes with a mixture of respect and regret.
Then comes the Hanegg-Schuss where speeds reach over 150 km/h. In the
Girardelli era, top speeds as high as 155 km/h were measured. "Back in our day, we
reached speeds of over 140 km/h", recalls Russi, who once fell badly coming out of
the Hanegg. "Russi cheats death" was the headline in the Blick newspaper.
The Seilerboden section gives the skiers time to catch their breath. Whereas
the Wegscheide and Österreicher Loch formerly drew all the attention, today it is
the Silberhorn jump, built in 2003, that is the primary source of spectacle. The
Österreicher Loch (or 'Austrian hole'), where Toni Sailer and co. fell one after the
other in 1954, has been filled in and smoothed over giving the athletes a brief mo-
ment of respite before they head for the finish at Ziel-S. According to Russi this is
"always a huge challenge, no matter how it has been set up and how fast you ap-
proach it. Everyone has burning thighs by the time they get there."
In any other race they would have long since crossed the finishing line. In
Wengen, the ultimate test of nerves is still to come. Since Bode Miller in 2007, no
other winner has completed the course in under two minutes. And even he crashed
over the finishing line completely exhausted.

LAUBERHORNRENNEN –
daherkommt. Jeder hat dort brennende Oberschenkel.»
In allen andern Abfahrten wäre man längst am Ziel. In Wengen folgt

elite Australian resort has stolen St. Moritz's own advertising
slogan. But this is not the case: the two upmarket winter
sports destinations joined forces some years ago to stimulate
an exchange of experiences. So it comes as no surprise to learn that, instead of
sunning themselves on a Mediterranean beach, many ski instructors from the
Engadine spend their summers working in the ski resort 'down under', a three-
hour drive from Melbourne.
Which is why 23-year-old Leo Luminati can be found on the Australian ski
slopes in the middle of August. "I love the mountains and the snow, and I like to
get out on my skis as often as I can", says the trained forester from the Engadine.

just tear up the slopes on a pair of giant slalom racing skis when he became one of
the youngest men in history to be crowned "King of the Engadine". Back in 1998,
the current CEO and President of White Turf, Silvio Martin Staub, was the only
contender to win the skijoring competition at an even earlier age. The most pres-
tigious trophy up for grabs on the frozen lake of St. Moritz is awarded to the skier
with the highest number of points from the skijoring races on all three racing
Sundays at White Turf St. Moritz. In 2010, Luminati and his horse Gallardo from
Christoph Müller's stable dominated their opponents.
Schlitteda came firstEven though the term 'skijoring' comes from Scandinavia, where it is part of the
Swedish and Norwegian culture, the origins of the Engadine Kings are to be
found in an ancient tradition known as the 'Schlitteda'. The "Schlitteda Enga-
dinaisa", a society highlight in
the Engandine calendar each
January or February, dates
back to earlier times when
horse and sleigh were the
only means of transport
available in winter.
On 1 March 1906,
the first skijoring competition was held on a stretch of road from St. Moritz to
Champfèr and back again. From these somewhat rudimentary beginnings a pro-
fessional race organisation has evolved, which accords highest priority to the
safety of horse and skier, both of which - along with their equipment - are subject
to a thorough inspection by race officials prior to the first day of racing.
Playing it coolRace days at White Turf St. Moritz are always something special – a highpoint for
every skijoring competitor. In the run up to each race, everyone plays it cool,
keeping their cards close to their chest. Which skier will be appearing with which
WHITE TURF ST. MORITZ
THE KING OF
THE ENGADINE
Die be-
ten bedeckt. Welcher Fahrer tritt mit welchem Pferd an? Welche neuen Paa-
rungen haben sich im vergangenen Jahr gebildet? Was bei den einen Taktik

horse? What new teams will have formed since the previous year? What some
consider tactics, others view as more of a necessity. Frequently, not every skier is
able to find a suitable horse – or rather an owner willing to make his horse avail-
able for the skijoring races.
Up there with the great names in skiingLeo Luminati was among those not wishing to make any statements about his
four-legged partner prior to the races. "I like to surprise my opponents on the day
of the race", he says with a sly grin. However, as a young shooting star, he has no
need to worry when it comes to finding support. He has just signed a sponsorship
deal with ski manufacturer Fischer, thus joining the ranks of top international
ski athletes such as Ivica Kostelic, Dario Cologna, Gregor Schlierenzauer and
Nolan Kasper.
"Skijoring is both a hobby and a passion", says Luminati. Growing up as a
neighbour of Franco Moro, one of the great skijoring champions, Luminati devel-
oped a fascination for this exciting sport at an early age. "I learned a lot from
Franco. Which made it all the sweeter when I managed to beat him on the course
in 2010", Luminati states. But one year later it was Moro who was back out in
front. Nevertheless, the two of them succeeded in knocking ten-time champion
Köbi Broger – the King of all Kings of the Engadine – from his throne.
Just like ancient RomeThere is no money to be made in skijoring. It's all about fame and honour, and
both are writ large in the upper valley of the Engadine. Leo Luminati won't be able
to put in any equestrian training during his Australian summer in the Mt. Buller
alpine region, but he will be able to work on his condition and keep himself fit.
This is important, as the 2,700 metre long course of a skijoring race goes straight
to the legs. But it's easy to forget the pain when the snow is falling gently all
around, when you can feel the breath of the pursuing horses on your neck and
when ten thousand enthusiastic spectators are cheering from the stands as if at a
chariot race in ancient Rome. An image that is not so far-fetched when you take a
look at the faces of the experienced skijoring heros and the young pretenders,
where you will see a merciless battle being fought for the throne of the King
of the Engadine.

so Leo Luminati.

nen Stöckelschuh in Nahaufnahme. Jemand steigt
aus einem Auto, der Absatz bricht ab. Die Stimme
fügt an: «Das haben wir gelernt». Von wem? Unseren Eltern natürlich.
Simon Dybbroe-Møller aus Dänemark zeigt den Film auf Einladung
des Kurators Jens Hoffmann, als Teil des Art Parcours. Einer der interessan-
testen Sektoren der Art Basel. Manchmal subtil eingebettet, andernorts laut
"Only that which breaks down can be truly beautiful",
proclaims the voice off screen. The film shows a high-
heeled shoe in close-up. Someone gets out of a car, the
heel snaps. The voice adds: "That's what we have
learned." From whom? Our parents, of course.
Danish-born Simon Dybbroe-Møller is showing the film at the invi-
tation of curator Jens Hoffmann as part of the Art Parcours, one of the most
interesting sectors of Art Basel. Art Parcours presents a variety of artistic
projects that make use of public spaces – sometimes subtly embedded in
their surroundings, sometimes loudly clashing with their environment –
thus opening up the city to discovery. Diverse methods – some more pro-
vocative than others – are used to entice visitors away from the exhibition
halls and engage them in a dialogue between the artworks, the city and its
inhabitants. The oases of contemplation and reflection thus created bring
life to many corners of the city unfamiliar even to locals.
Every year, during the week of the fair, Art Basel
spills out onto the streets of Basel: the successful
Art Parcours sector mediates between art and the
public, drawing attention to both classic works and
new discoveries.

in Sizilien verkleinern lassen.
Over lunch you can discover the ironic homage to Picasso by Canadian
Rodney Graham, who playfully describes his paintings as those of a gifted ama-
teur. However, the canvasses are not hanging on the walls of the Restaurant zur
Magd for sheer decoration. The intention is clearly to toy with the perception of
the restaurant guests who, mistaking these faux Picassos for the genuine article,
are thus taken in by the work itself.
As in previous years, the stations of Art Parcours are spread across a
single neighbourhood. This year it's the turn of the historic St. Johann quarter.
Once the meal is over, there is still Mateo Tannatt's restaging of Allan Kaprow's
happening to be seen at the Restaurant Zur Mägd – an installation consisting of
a room full of furniture which the public is invited to constantly rearrange. Im-
bued with nostalgia for the 1960s, we hit the streets again with a spring in our
step. A short detour to one of the former studios of Dieter Roth, who spent the
last years of his life here in Basel. His son Björn has recreated the space in an at-
tempt to conjure up the spirit of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
Back out onto the streets!
Artist Aleksandra Mir has pilfered Gabriel Orozco's idea of the modified
Citroen and had her own Fiat 600 cut down to size in Sicily. We now come across
it, parked at an angle, as we follow the road and turn the corner down towards
the Rhine, where we find another car – this time backed into a garage, a Renault
Avantime, its boot door standing wide open. Inside the boot, Dybbroe Møller's
film is playing. The voice says: "We know about production, pleasure, work."

lungsfirma ging in Folge Konkurs.
The car, the film's protagonist, is a curiosity of post-modern industrial tech-
nology. Actually a car of the future that promised miracles, with a whole host
of technical advancements and new aesthetic features. It came onto the mar-
ket in 2001, only to flop miserably. Just over 8,000 vehicles had been manu-
factured when production was discontinued, with the design company sub-
sequently going bust. It was this contrast between promise and total failure
that attracted Simon Dybbroe Møller. "My work employs this car as the scaf-
folding on which to hang various topics that interest me", the Danish artist
tells us. "It deals with the
ideas of aesthetics and
beauty that are passed
down to us by our par-
ents." Dybbroe-Møller
grew up in 1980's Copen-
hagen, his parents left-
wing intellectuals. "On the parking lots in front of the university there
are only French cars", says the film's narrator. In the 1980s, the Danish Left
engaged with the ideas of French philosophers and, as a mark of solidarity,
preferred to drive around in French cars, which were notorious for breaking
down. In one moment of the film a photograph can be seen of the artist's
father in a Citroën in the woods. The car is rusted and there is a hole in the
floor. The voice says: "You taught us about progress. About growth."
"It's easy to talk about your own parents. Everyone does it", he says.
"You start analysing what kind of people they really are and notice
how things that you simply accepted as a child now turn out to be
deconstructible truths."

MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL
Exceptional times at a hotel steeped in tradition:
during the annual Jazz Festival, the Palace in Montreux
metamorphoses from luxury hotel to home base for
musicians and fans.
Top Events of Switzerland | Nr. 5 | 2013 35
When Prince appeared at the Montreux Jazz Festival for the very first time
in 2009, like most of the great names in the music business, he naturally stayed at
the Palace. However, anxious to avoid any unwanted attention, the eccentric pop
star chose not to enter the building officially by its main entrance. He used the back
door instead, shielded from the prying eyes of any paparazzi and pushy fans by the
black umbrellas of his entourage. "But there was no one there waiting to bother
him", recalls Michael Smithuis, General Manager of the Fairmont Le Montreux
Palace since 2003. Prince soon noticed that he was free to come and go unmolested
– indeed, that people like Santana simply strolled across to their concerts at the
Festival, guitar case in hand. Smithuis smiles: "It's the kind of thing you see hap-
pening here a lot." After all, the 107-year-old hotel in the Belle Époque style is just a
stone's throw away from the main Festival building. During Festival time, the
boulevard and lake-side
promenade are so bustling
with musicians and music
fans that "ordinary" tourists
easily get lost in the crowd.
Things do not run as
usual in the hotel itself either
during the first three weeks of
July. Night becomes day, as Smithuis and his team work round the clock. Harry's
Bar, the five-star hotel's very own watering hole, is constantly full to overflowing.
It's not unusual for the stars to engage in a spontaneous jam session here after the
evening's concert. And when there's no live band pumping up the volume and
rocking the house, the conversation turns to every topic imaginable, including
music and the meaning of life, and people dance as the party spills out onto the
street.
Cooking up loyaltyFor 47 years now, the international jazz community has been converging on Mon-
treux for its summer gathering. That's how long the Festival has been running and

liche» Touristen dazwischen verlieren.
Top Events of Switzerland | Nr. 5 | 201338
MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL
that's how long the Palace has been involved in all the vibrant goings-on. Musi-
cians like Quincy Jones have become regular visitors. Each has their own suite, like
Festival founder "Funky Claude" Nobs, the late, lamented Freddy Mercury,
singer with the band Queen, or Russian novelist Vladimir Nabokov ("Lolita"), who
made the prestigious hotel on the shores of Lake Geneva his home for 17 years.
Gisèle Sommer, PR Coordinator at the Palace, has a tale or two to tell about
its famous guests. "Most of them are actually really straightforward", she main-
tains. For example, she once came across soul diva Randy Crawford practising on
the grand piano in the lobby one fine afternoon. Prince played in the lobby
too for a handful of employees, after ordering dinner by candlelight there at
four in the morning.
A somewhat more modest Quincy Jones, exhausted after his concert, once
asked for something hot, and preferably spicy. There was a little chicken left over,
and so the chef conjured up "Quincy’s Chicken Poussin" in no time at all. The dish
has been on the menu in Harry's Bar ever since. "Quincy", Gisèle Sommer laughs,
"never eats anything else when he stays here. And he comes back every year."
Playing music instead of sport"Little Cannes", as Montreux is often known, is now attracting more and more
visitors from China, India and Russia to the "Swiss Riviera". And the town takes on
a particularly international ambience during the Festival. For what is now a hot
spot for music freaks from all over the world was once the place where the ladies
and gentlemen of high society, distinguished by their fine pallor, came for physical
exercise – including French acting legend Sarah Bernhardt. Free workshops with
artists such as Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) actually take place in what was formerly
the skating rink of the hotel's dépendance "Le Petit Palais" .
The Piano and Voice Competitions are also held in the ornate rooms of
the Palace. "During these few weeks the hotel is practically taken over by the Jazz
Festival", grins Michael Smithuis as he gallantly raises his glass to toast the winner.

sische Schauspielikone Sarah Bernhardt.
Haus quasi vom Jazz Festival übernommen», schmunzelt Michael Smithuis

TONDA 1950 DIAMOND-SETWhen Parmigiani Fleurier launched the outstanding classic extra-thin Tonda 1950 watch in 2010, the intention was always for this model to house several new executions – including, of course, a women’s version. In 2012, Parmigiani Fleurier is proud to present the new diamond-set Tonda 1950, with a bezel featuring 84 diamonds, delicately integrated without altering the elegant profile of the piece or disturbing its harmonious proportions.Just like its predecessor – the Tonda 1950 – the new diamond-set Tonda 1950 embodies the stylistic essence of Parmigiani Fleurier, stripped down to the brand’s signature codes, and nothing more. The thin, slender profile with the two emblematic lugs; the cut round crown; the delta-shaped hands.
PARMIGIANI FLEURIER’SWOMEN OF EXCEPTION
PARMIGIANI FLEURIER SARUE DU TEMPLE 11
AUTHENTICITY, CREATIVITY AND SIMPLICITY ARE THE CORNERSTONES OF PARMIGIANI FLEURIER’S PHILOSOPHY AND THESE VALUES APPLY TO MORE THAN JUST THEIR WATCHES: THEY GUIDE EACH AND EVERY DECISION THE BRAND TAKES.
When the ladies’ collection was launched in 2006, Parmigiani Fleurier embarked on its Women of Exception project to recognise women from around the world who have devoted their lives to fields as diverse as science, medicine, business, sport, art and culture. These women have been the architects of their own success; they have excel-led in their field of expertise through selflessness, creativity and independence of spirit, tirelessly employing their qualities to the full day after day. Simply and without arrogance, these women have become leaders in their chosen domains while retaining their sense of curiosity and passion to guarantee continued success in future projects. Parmigiani Fleurier wishes to recognise these exceptional women for their accom-plishments, which sit perfectly with the brand’s own chrished philosophy. This title has nothing to do with celebrity, fortune or status; it is a distinction that acknowledges merit – an expression of admiration.Today, Parmigiani Fleurier is deeply proud and honoured to bestow on these women the title of Woman of Exception, and to appoint them as worldwide ambassadors for the brand.A new watch from the ladies’ collection will be presented to each of them in honour of the philosophy they share with the brand, and to recognise the common values that underpin the success of these Women of Exception.
“SUCCESS COMES FROM A COMBINATION OF INSEPARABLE AND COMPLEMENTARY FACTORS: SELFSACRIFICE, TECHNIQUE, PURIT Y OF MOVEMENT, POWER AND
FINESSE. THESE QUALITIES, WHICH ARE PRACTISED AND PERFECTED BY PARMIGIANI’S CRAFTSMEN AND WOMEN,
ARE EVIDENT IN THIS WATCH, WHICH I SHALL WEAR WITH IMMENSE PRIDE!”

Piazza Grande’s giant screen and the open-air screenings, the rows
and rows of yellow and black seats. You can devise your own itiner-

glamorous aspects of the programme, there is one thing on which everyone agrees:
the Festival del film Locarno is above all an experience. Everyone has their own
story to tell, stories which now and again can be brought out like a photo album. If
the Festival is above all a meeting place, it is so from the very first morning, when
festivalgoers gather under the white tent of the Forum, to participate in a public
conversation with major figures from the film world. At the 65th edition, Char-
lotte Rampling, Alain Delon, Leos Carax, Ornella Muti, and also the President of

der Welt des Films teilzunehmen. An der 65. Ausgabe anzutreffen waren Char-
freien Geist seiner Erfahrungen in Locarno erzählt.
Man braucht
directors in contemporary cinema. A discussion with an open roving mike, which
he began with a personal account of his world, haunted by the ghosts which have
always been part of the poetic fabric of films such as "Uncle Boonmee Who Can
Recall His Past Lives" and "Mekong Hotel". Films that, for those who wanted to,
could be seen in the cinemas, as amidst the maze of programming there is a
section for films made by jury members and hence an opportunity to rediscover
masterpieces from the recent past. Again, the screenings always have the director
present, a confirmation of this desire
to encourage dialogue between those
behind and in front of the screen.
The same goes for another top-drawer
jury member at the 65th Locarno
Film Festival, the American filmmaker
Roger Avary. A master of the pulp aes-
thetic, not only for the script with which
he sealed a historic collaboration with
Quentin Tarantino on "Pulp Fiction", but also demonstrated in the blog Avary
wrote during the festival, about the “free spirit” of his Locarno experiences, for the
official festival website pardolive.ch.
His account is written almost like a script, and is full of anecdotes and irony. Fur-
thermore, at Locarno it is more than clear that if cinema is nourished by life, and
life by cinema, the Festival always offers up double servings. All you have to do is
weave your way through the lunch tables at the Magistrale, or attend the cocktails

Every August the whole town of Locarno ends up decked out in the spotted black
and yellow coat of the leopard. But until the 1960s the prize awarded to competi-
tion winners was a sail, which was given up in 1968 and replaced with a new statu-
ette, designed by local sculptor Remo Rossi: the leopard. Among the past winners:
1959 “Killer's Kiss” by Stanley Kubrick (USA)
1964 “Cerny Petr” (Black Peter) by Milos Forman (Czech Republic)
1969 “Charles mort ou vif” by Alain Tanner (Switzerland)

Tessiner Bildhauer Remo Rossi geschaffen wurde: der Leopard. Zu den früheren

FESTIVAL DEL FILM LOCARNO
zutauschen.
at the Casorella, to understand that even moments of relaxation may turn out to be
the best time to continue exchanging ideas and projects. Curiosity and a desire to
discover new things are not confined to closed screening rooms: here, there is a real
concern to eliminate all barriers. As can be seen on the Piazza Grande, where,
under the starry sky, stars, film fans and tourists find themselves in close proxim-
ity, just a few seats away from one another. And then with the calendar of red car-
pet events that gives rise to speeches of great humanitarianism such as that of
Harry Belafonte, or the excitement surrounding the Excellence Award Moët &
Chandon for the Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal, a groundswell of infectious
emotion is guaranteed. This feeling was also experienced by another International
Competition jury member, French director Noémie Lvovsky, who was at Locarno
not only to select the winners for 2012, but also to present her new film, "Camille
Redouble", on one of the biggest screens in the whole of Europe. A sign that, more
than a mere succession of events, it also succeeds in bringing the sidebar sections
of the Festival together with the main strands. A blending of diverse visions that
also occurs with the focus on films made by artists such as the American Sarah
Morris. Her work was introduced to the audience by the Swiss curator, Hans Ul-
rich Obrist, also a jury member at Locarno, as was Korean filmmaker Im Sang-
soo. Yet another testament to the call for “films, above all", which for Locarno is not
simply a slogan but a way to involve everyone in the same experience. An experi-
ence that, once the screening is over, may continue in the various social activities
that take place throughout the Locarno night. At the Lido in Ascona, for example,
where once again, industry professionals and general public alike can meet and
chat, an extension of the ‘final credits’ that unspool every day during the Festival.

Switzerland’s traditions, customs and cultural treas-ures are as varied as its spectacular natural landscapes. Round off your visit to one of the Top Events of Switzer-land with an experience of local culture – twinned with the thrill of exploring somewhere new.
The finest classical music awaits at the Lucerne Festival, but Switzerland’s
folklore is also full of charm: you could join a flag-throwing class in the
idyllic Entlebuch region, learn to play a tune on an alphorn up at Klewen-
alp – or take advantage of any of a wide range of other opportunities to
discover Swiss customs.

Ticino’s highest mountain village, Bosco Gurin, offers visitors the chance
to discover a little-known aspect of Swiss culture by walking in the foot-
steps of the German-speaking Walser people. The region is also renowned
for its gastronomy – savour it at a traditional Ticino “grotto” inn, serving
local sausage, cheese and Merlot wine. The combination of top-class con-
temporary arts at the Locarno Film Festival and authentic local culture
make a trip to Ticino truly exceptional.

Sporting thrills – and excellence – are promised at the Omega European
Masters in Crans-Montana, but away from the golf course, the stunning
Valais mountain scenery is a delight to explore on foot. Especially charm-

provide a fascinating insight into traditional farming methods dating
back centuries.

When the best musicians come together under the baton
of Maestro Claudio Abbado, then it can only mean one
thing: Lucerne Festival. But things have to run smoothly
backstage to guarantee a perfect performance onstage.
Menschen an diesem prächtigen Sommerabend in Bewegung.

Stimme geschmeidig gemacht. Hinter einer der Türen arbeitet der Visagist
Roger Niederberger.

sequently be released. 27 people are involved in its production.
Inside the orchestraMusicians shouldering a violin case, lugging a heavy double bass or carrying a
wood instrument in its brightly coloured case quickly make their way through
the narrow space between the lorries. The security man opens the door, giving
them access to the backstage area. Only people who belong here are allowed to
pass. Musicians, soloists,
technicians, concert hall staff
and those involved in
filming. The front-of-house
staff are receiving their final
briefing on the evening's
events. "We'll have to see how
exactly we're going to go
about presenting the bouquets." Another burning question is how to deal with
members of the public who take photos during the concert or otherwise block
the view of those around them. Both the event and the venue call for a great deal
of tact and finesse from everyone involved.
The backstage area stretches over four floors. The soloists' rooms occupy pride of
place. Coloratura runs are being practised, the voice limbered up. Make-up art-
ist Roger Niederberger works behind one of these doors. Right now, he is attend-
ing to alto Sara Mingardo. A special make-up is required because of the HD
recording. The pores of the skin must not be covered up – otherwise the face will
appear flat on screen – but some kind of make-up is still needed. The specially
developed pressed powder, however, has its pitfalls. Niederberger can't use it on

the naturally tanned visage of Bruno Ganz, for example. His bronzed com-
plexion, combined with the powder, would give both the audience in the Inseli
Park and the TV viewers at home the impression that the actor had a grey face.
Musicians are a tough breed Some of the musicians are stretching their legs while they can on the long stair-
way, so characteristic of the building. Most of the 75 members of the orchestra,
which is going to play Beethoven's Egmont, have already gathered in the foyer,
two floors down. A buzz of voices, instruments still being tuned, and above it all,
still clearly audible, the hum of the coffee machine. Clarinet player Reiner Weh-
le grabs the chance to enjoy one last cup. He responds to my question about
nervousness before the performance with a laugh. "Musicians are a tough breed,
that's why we're never ill". The stage manager rings the bell twice. The musicians
get ready. The orchestra's two stagehands open the doors: strings before wind,
first violins before second violins. That is the sequence in which the musicians go
on stage. A warm wave of applause rises up to meet them. Soprano Juliane Ban-
se, eye-catching in her long red dress, is ready to make her entrance alongside
Bruno Ganz and Claudio Abbado. A quick exchange of well wishes, then they
too step out to greet the audience. The doors are closed, Beethoven's music
sounds out, and already the first members of the chorus, which doesn't
actually appear until the second part of the evening, make their way to
the musicians' foyer.
Alto Sara Mingardo stands slightly to one side. "I'm really nervous and it
gets worse each year. But as soon as I see Claudio Abbado, hear the first bars of
music, it all subsides and I can actually enjoy the performance." She smiles and
smooths down her lace gown. The stagehands open the side doors once more,
the stage managers present the bouquets to the soloists. The audience heads off
to enjoy the interval. Now the people back stage have their hands full. At long
last, when the opening bars of Mozart's Requiem are struck up, complete silence
reigns behind the scenes for the first time all evening.

Weltrekordhalter erlangen sie bisweilen, die absolute Voll-
kommenheit.
wenigsten in letzter Vollendung äussert.
World record holders sometimes achieve it: absolute
perfection. For a moment, they find themselves "in
the f low", a state of mind which we have no doubt all
experienced at one time or another, but which only
leads to the ultimate in perfection in a very few cases. "Flow" describes
the feeling of being totally immersed in the present moment, when we
lose all sense of time and concentrate on the activity we are perform-
ing. We are tense, yet energised, focused, but at the same time relaxed.
Nothing can stop us, everything seems to happen automatically.

By itself, as if in a dream.
Carmelita Jeter experienced this for herself in the Olympic Stadium in
London when she received the relay baton from Allyson Felix and – without
thinking – instinctively did what had to be done. There was just her, the baton
and the finishing line, noth-
ing more than the here and
now. The US team's anchor
woman stormed down the
track in the last leg of the
4x100 m relay – to a new
world record. 40.82 seconds
that will last forever. It was
as if someone had stuffed her inside a soda bottle, and given it a good shake
before quickly removing the top.
Practically no limits
While it is possible to explain a state of this kind in terms of physiology, it can-
not be replicated. For a moment, heartbeat, breathing and blood pressure dis-
play optimum synchronicity. The limbic system, which controls our emotions,
is in complete harmony with the cortical system/neocortex, the part of the
brain in which conscious thought and reasoning are said to reside.
Admittedly, there is an additional component that comes into play in
the case of top athletes, whose muscles are so perfectly trained that they can
perform even complex patterns of movement as if carried along by the flow.
There are practically no limits to what a top athlete can achieve. Those who
succeed in getting in the 'flow' or 'zone' are inevitably bound to post a new
personal best or, for the very best among them, even a world record.
IN SEARCH OF
THE SYMBIOSIS OF
BODY AND MIND

Nirvana for the sporting elite
It is therefore only logical that track and field athletes will aim to get in the flow
during competition. Time and again. It is viewed as the highest reward, repre-
senting something of a nirvana in sport at this top level. The way to achieve it
is through training – both physical and mental. Even the most perfectly
formed physique will turn out to be an idle luxury if the head isn't willing,
if body and mind are not working together.
You can see the daily preparation reflected in their faces, in expressions
of fearlessness, strength and confidence, no matter whether they are runners,
sprinters, jumpers or throwers. And there is no event in Switzerland that re-
veals this symbiosis between body and mind in a more diverse and impressive
manner than the Weltklasse Zürich. Nowhere else are more people united 'in
the flow' at this level.

Dynamische Linien und perfekt ausbalancierte Proportionen be-
Formvollendetes Design, feinste Materialien, handwerkliche Verar-
anpassen. Dabei eröffnet die erweiterte Black-Panel-Technologie auf
einer Bildschirmdiagonalen von 10,25 Zoll völlig neue Anzeigemög-
lichkeiten. Je nach Fahrmodus präsentieren sich die Instrumente
Sporting poise and luxuriouscomfort in perfect harmony.
The new BMW 7 Series is set to reinforce its position as the most
innovative sedan in the luxury segment. The flagship model series of
the BMW fleet embodies sporting elegance, refined powertrain tech-
nology and luxurious comfort in equal measure. And now, by ma-
king a clear step up in terms of product substance, the Sedan is set to
underline its leadership. New LED headlights, an upgraded interior
with optimised soundproofing, markedly improved ride comfort, a
comprehensive selection of optional equipment and state-of-the-art
safety technology combine to create an in-car experience from the
top drawer. A line-up of either new or optimised drive systems, in-
cluding the world’s most powerful six-cylinder in-line diesel engine
and the second-generation BMW ActiveHybrid 7, set new perfor-
mance and efficiency benchmarks.
Dynamic lines and perfectly balanced proportions continue to lie at
the heart of the BMW 7 Series Sedan’s sporty and elegant presence.
The most eyecatching feature of the new BMW 7 Series are the new
LED headlights with hallmark BMW corona rings and a smart accent
strip, which now ensure the new BMW 7 Series projects a distinctive
appearance at night as well. The modified BMW kidney grille with
nine slats – instead of the previous 12 – and revised front apron set
the new model apart from its predecessor. Elsewhere, indicators inte-
grated into the lower section of the exterior mirrors are among the
new features visible from the side. And last but not least, the power-
fully chiselled rear benefits from a thin chrome strip connecting the
two slim reflectors in the rear apron.
Flawlessly executed design, top-class materials, quality workman-
ship and outstanding practicality define the interior of the BMW 7
Series Sedan. The driver and front passenger can relax into newly
designed leather seats offering optimum lateral support and unbea-
table long-distance comfort. The rear passengers, too, travel in luxu-
ry and are largely cocooned from outside noise. Individual seats are
also available as an option for the rear and can be adapted to passen-
gers’ needs. And the optional Rear Seat Entertainment package with
a new 9.2-inch flat screen monitor ensures a refreshing diversion is
always at hand over extended journeys. The new 1,200-watt Bang &
Olufsen High End Surround Sound System delivers unimpeachable
sound quality. Its 16 speakers include an illuminated centre speaker
which retracts almost fully into the instrument panel.
In the new BMW 7 Series, the multifunctional instrument display
behind the steering wheel takes its cues from the driver’s needs. Ex-
tended black-panel technology opens up a whole new range of dis-
play options through the 10.25-inch screen. The instruments are
now presented using different colours and graphics depending on
the driving mode selected, and provide situation-specific informati-
on such as status and function displays. The Control Display in the
centre of the instrument panel has also benefited from visual and
technical improvements and now uses high-resolution 3D graphics.

The new BMW 7 Series Sedan will hit the ground running in 2012
armed with new and comprehensively revised engines which are
extremely economical and low on emissions and channel their pow-
er to the driven wheels through an intelligent eight-speed automatic
transmission. Technology such as the Auto Start-Stop function,
Brake Energy Regeneration, the Driving Experience Control switch
with ECO PRO mode with extended functions and coasting mode
pave the way for additional fuel saving. Alongside the flagship BMW
760i with its 12-cylinder powerplant, there is a choice of the BMW
740i with a new BMW TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line engine
or the BMW 750i with a revised V8 petrol engine. The six-cylinder
diesel engines in the BMW 730d and BMW 740d likewise offer dri-
vers the combination of increased output and lower fuel consumpti-
on. Making its debut, meanwhile, is the new BMW 750d xDrive.
Under its bonnet lies the new M Performance TwinPower Turbo
six-in-line diesel engine – the world’s most powerful diesel engine of
its kind. Rounding off the range is the second-generation BMW
ActiveHybrid 7 combining a new TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder
in-line petrol engine with a 40 kW/55 hp electric motor for signifi-
cantly reduced emissions. An impressive spread of chassis wizardry
helps give the ride comfort of the BMW 7 Series Sedan a noticeable
boost. Complementing the optimised chassis set-up – with modified
rubber bearings and new dampers – and the self-levelling air
suspension for the rear axle is the standard-fitted Electric Power
Steering. State-of-the-art electronic control systems with likewise
retuned software help to enhance the long-distance attributes of the
BMW 7 Series Sedan and ensure that the new edition of the car makes
travelling on board even more pleasurable – in terms of both dynamics
and comfort.
A unique combination of driver assistance systems and mobility ser-
vices allows the BMW 7 Series to once again demonstrate its innova-
tive edge and technical eminence over its rivals. To this end, the
BMW ConnectedDrive portfolio includes impressive new features
that enable the Sedan to maintain its leading position in the luxury
segment. Among the systems helping to maximise safety are BMW
Night Vision + Dynamic Light Spot with pedestrian recognition
technology (unique in the premium segment), the anti-dazzle LED
High-Beam Assistant, Driver Assistant Plus with Lane Departure
Warning and Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Active Protec-
tion with automatic fatigue recognition and Speed Limit Info inclu-
ding the No Passing Info display using road sign symbols. A more
powerful operating system governing the central Control Display en-
sures the entertainment programs are simpler to operate, optimises
office and online services, and makes using the telephone that much
easier. The Professional navigation system, meanwhile, is now more
powerful and features new and ultra-sharp map graphics and 3D city
mode. An innovative feature allowing convenient hands-free ope-
ning of the boot lid rounds off the function-focused highlights of the
BMW 7 Series.
ren Plus an Fahrkomfort.
T E X T: Me d a rd Meier, BI L DE R : Omega Eu ropea n Ma sters
Since 2009, the Omega European Masters has been part
not just of the PGA European Tour but also the only
tournament in Europe to be co-sanctioned by the PGA
Asian Tour – a tour which has been developing rapidly
thanks to young players from India, Korea and Thailand.
sant entwickelt.
"Our most important player is the sun." Yves Mittaz, who
has been head of the organisation committee in Crans for
25 years, speaks without the merest hint of irony. His
words are easily understandable for all those who follo-
wed the Omega European Masters 2012 with cold hands and hoods pulled up
snugly over their heads.
It wouldn't have taken much more for the fairways and greens to have been co-
vered in white: the snowfall altitude plunged dramatically on the Friday – al-
most encroaching on the high plateau 1500 metres above sea level where golf has
been played for more than 100 years and which has been an annual fixture in the
sport's European Tour since the latter was founded in 1972.

«UUnser wichtigster Spieler ist die Sonne.» Yves Mittaz,
Top Events of Switzerland | Nr. 5 | 201370
wachsendes «Prize Money».
besondere Anirban Lahiri, Achter der asiatischen Order of Merit.
Teilnehmer am US Open Furore machte.
Viel-
leicht an den nächsten Olympischen Spielen in Brasilien, wo Golf wieder
eine Disziplin sein wird. Zumindest die asiatischen Spieler richten sich
If the two dozen or so top players from Asia were also feeling the cold, they
at least did their best not to let it show. The prize money for which the 250
players from 30 Far East nations compete around the globe now stands at
around 40 million dollars. That might not sound like much compared to the
100 million that can be won on the European Tour and the 220 million up
for grabs in the USA. But,
unlike Europe and the US,
the prize money in Asia is
growing steadily. At the la-
test in ten years time, Mike
Kerr, CEO of the Asian
tour, is convinced that "we
will have caught up with
Europe". Coincidentally, he found the weather in Crans to be something of a
blessing: "A nice change from the heat in Singapore!", from where he and his
team of 35 employees run the organisation.
One Asian player who proved particularly unimpressed by the wea-
ther in Crans was Anirban Lahiri, eighth in the Asian Order of Merit. The
28-year-old Indian, who had also qualified for the British Open, shot a 66 in
his opening round on the Severiano Ballesteros Course to finish five strokes
under par. He claims he was able to simply ignore the rain. Lahiri, who
meditates twice a day, doesn't just aim to win, he also wants to become
a "better person".
Even though he wasn't able to keep up the momentum in the follow-
ing round, Lahiri served as a reminder that, with each year that passes, Asia's
men are more and more of a force to be reckoned with – much as the Asian
ladies have been demonstrating for some time now with one victory after

mann Paul Lawrie gewettet hatten.
another. Also garnering attention was 14-year-old Chinese player Andy
Zhang, who trains in Florida and who rocketed into the spotlight as the
youngest player at this year's US Open. In Crans, he finished his first round
a respectable one over par. After which, however, the weather began to take
its toll. But we will certainly be hearing much more from him in future.
Perhaps at the next Olympic Games in Brazil, where golf will once again
rank among the featured disciplines. The Asian players at any rate have long
since had their sights set on Rio, and are chasing valuable qualification
points wherever they can.
It was probably no coincidence that the man who came to the Valais
Alps to win Switerland's biggest golf tournament in such convincing style
following a run of consistent performances was Richie Ramsay, a weather-
hardened 29-year-old Scotsman. "I have the feeling that I have now definite-
ly 'arrived' on the Tour", an overjoyed Ramsay said following his greatest
triumph to date.
Understandable, given that the experts were actually tipping Ramsay's
countryman Paul Lawrie for the title. Although the 49-year-old Ryder Cup
player and favourite managed to close the gap between himself and his
younger colleague at the start of the final round, Lawrie then began to let
chances slip and found himself sharing what can only be considered a very
disappointing sixth-place finish.
The most important player, on the other hand, finally showed off its
best side, bathing the mountains around the high plateau in the brilliant
sunshine we have come to associate with Crans-Montana, and attracting
more than 10,000 spectators to the course. A feast of golf – at which the prize
giving ceremony was traditionally accompanied by the warm tones
of the alphorn.
