Clamping, Accuracy and Areas of Use

All clamping elements in the series MK / MBPS / BWPS / TKPS / AUPS / KBH and HK are mounted on floating bearings, which means that the lifting movements of the contact profilescan be carried out from either side. Relative movements resulting from the clamping process donot occur. Care must be taken to ensure the connection design is correct.

The abrasion-free connection between the clamping element and the linear guide is created atthe free surfaces of the guide rails. Series MK / MKS / AUPS/ KWH and HK are designed exclusively for static clamping operations. Because they use the appropriate contact profiles,Series MBPS/ BWPS / TKPS / KBH / MBES are suitable for dynamic use (brakes).

Pneumatic and PLUS Connection

Clean and lubricated compressed air is the pressure medium for the pneumatic elements. Theprescribed filter size is 25 µm.

For sizes up to 20, air supply must be 4mm tube or greater. For sizes over 20, air supply mustbe 6mm tube or greater. Smaller cross-sections adversely reduce the response and reaction times of the elements. The feed line should be kept as short as possible. In principle, all conventional pneumatic valves are suitable.

The response time of the corresponding valve should be determined from the respective manufacturer, in particular when the valve is employed as a brake or a safety device againstfalling. For use as PLUS version we recommend pneumatic valves free of overflow or for example 5/3 way valves (with unpressurized neutral position). When valves are used that arenot free of overflow, overflow can occur at the piston seals when they are activated.

The pneumatic spring-loaded elements MKS/BWPS/TKPS can be pressurized with air (also called PLUS air) on the rod-side. This can increase the holding load up to 2.5 times.

Hydraulic Connections

The hydraulic clamping elements are prefilled with HLP 46 at the factory. The hydraulic connection is available on both sides, however one connection is sufficient for operation. Special care has to be taken when exposing the rigid and flexible hydraulic inlet pipes to air, since airlocks can damage the sealing elements.

Technical Operation Principles

Connection Design, Installation of the Clamping Elements

To avoid adverse effects such as permanent rubbing on the linear guide, the connection mustbe designed according to the load taken and the requirements made. Any inclination of the exactly aligned clamping elements can cause rubbing and wear of the linear guide rails. Thefactory preadjustment is adapted precisely to the linear guide and must not be altered duringassembly. For assembling the main and secondary guide rails please follow exactly the instructions of the respective manufacturer.

All spring-loaded elements have internal mechanisms that will be damaged if operated withoutlimiting the stroke of the contact profiles. They are shipped with stroke-limiting devices. Whenmounting, supply air pressure to the port and install on the guide rail before releasing air pressure.

CAUTION: DO NOT operate without either the stroke-limiting device or guide rail presentas damage to the element will occur.

In applications with very heavy loads, the number of clamping elements should be split equally on both rail guides to ensure the rigidity of the whole construction. For further information see www.zimmer-gmbh.com

Lubrication

If the prescribed pressure medium is used, later lubrication will not be necessary.

Surface Protection

All clamping housings made of steel are chemically nickled and thus have rust protection. Partsmade from aluminium are chemically nickled or hard-anodized, according to requirements.

Wedge Slide Gear

Resulting transverse movement of the contact sections

High holding forces - low cost: The pneumatic Clamping Element MK.

The MK is the classic element under the Zimmer clamping elements. The patented wedge slide gear achieves highsupporting forces. The pressure medium moves the wedge slide gear in longitudinal direction. The resulting transverse movement presses contact sections with high force against the free surfaces of the linear guide. The MKis clamped (closed) with pneumatic pressure. The MKS is clamped (closed) by spring force and is opened by pneumatic pressure.

Special Characteristics:• Compact Design• High clamping forces• Exact positioning• Strong axial and horizontal rigidity

Base Module

Variations:According to the height of the guide carriage an additional adapter plate must be ordered (see table)

Connection possibilities:The MK/MKS Series have air connections on both sidesas part of their standard equipment. This means that the air connection and the air-releasefilter can be moved over to the opposite side.

Higher supporting forces by PLUS connection (MKS):By using a 5/2-(free of overflow) or a 5/3-valve it ispossible to support the spring power with pneumaticpressure. By using the PLUS connection, the stated supporting force will be increased up to 2.5 times. When PLUS air (only MKS) is being used the air-releasefilter is replaced by connecting a second pneumatic tube (see drawing). For further information, please refer to the assembly instructions or visit www.zimmer-gmbh.com.

The MKR (clamping for corrugated sections) andthe MKE (clamping with electric drive) are featured as separate construction series.

Description

Wedge Slide Gear

Resulting transverse movement of the contact sections

The MKR is our classic element for round-shaft guides, clamping (closing) with air pressure. The patented wedgeslide gear enables high fixing powers. Pressure moves the wedge slide gear in longtitudinal direction. The resulting transverse movement presses the contact sections against the shaft guides. The MKRS element is a spring-loadedenergy storage version of the MKR.

MB

The MB series is based on a dual-effective wedge slide gear with a spring-loaded energy storage for both depressu-rized clamping and braking. As a specific feature it has three pistons connected in line. This arrangement allowsthe use of a stronger spring at 4.5 bar than the BW-series does. The stronger spring-loaded storage permits holdingforces up to 3800N. The MBPS series is designed for braking on linear guides. Because of the material combinationo flinear guide and contact sections the linear guide cannot be damaged by the contact.

In order to exclude damages through contamination with chips (chips between contact section and linear guide),the elements can be fitted with original seals from the respective linear guide manufacturer as accessories. In order to guarantee the life time of the seals, follow the corresponding instructions by the respective linear guidemanufacturer. Details on the length of the brake path to be expected will be given by our technical advisers. Thecomputations are based on serial tests as well as our experience in the industry.

Active without Pressure and Efficient: The Clamping and Braking Element with spring-loaded energy storage BW.

This series is based on a dual-effective wedge slide gear, each with spring-loaded energy storage for clamping andbraking without air pressure. Compressed air is used as the pressure medium. Positive fit contact sections mounted within a strong casing guarantee high axial and horizontal rigidity.

The material combination of linear guide and contact section mean the linear guide section won't be damaged bythe contact section. To prevent damage by contamination with chips between contact section and linear guide. The elements can be fitted with original seals from the respective linear guide manufacturer and longitudinal sealsas accessories.

When used in a heavily polluted environment or with cooling liquid, seals should be used as well. When used as brakes, the front-side seals decrease the reaction time of the clamping element. In order to guarantee the life timeof these seals, follow the corresponding instructions by the respective linear guide manufacturer. Details on thelength of the brake path to be expected can be supplied by our technical advisers. The computations are based onserial tests as well as our experience in the industry.

Seals (acces-sories)

Variations:The BW construction series has different possibilities. For screwing the elements from underneath a distanceplate is necessary. Seals are recommended for harshwork environments.

Connection variations:The basic version of BWPS features ports on both sides. This means that the factory pre-assembled air connection and the air-exhaust filter can be rotated tothe opposite side. In addition, you can supply the airfrom the front (the PLUS version cannot be connectedat the front).

Higher supporting forces by PLUS connection:By insertion of a 5/2-(free of overflow) or a 5/3-valveit is possible to support the spring power with pneumatic pressure. This will increase the stated supporting force up to 2.5-times. The connection takes place according to the prestated plan.

When the PLUS air port is used, the air-exhaust filteris replaced by connecting a second pneumatic tube. The BWPS series is fitted with integrated quick-actionexhaust valves depending on the size of the unit. Clamping without Pressure and Efficient: The Clamping and Braking Element with spring-loaded energy storage TK.

The TK construction series is based on dual-effective wedge slide gear. Each side has one spring-loaded energy storage for clamping and braking without pressure. The TK has the unique feature of three pistons switchedin one line. With this design it is possible to use and clamp with a stronger spring at 5.5 bar than the BW series. The stronger spring-loaded energy storage allows supporting forces up to 6700N. The solid construction casing withintegrated contact sections guarantee a high axial and horizontal rigidity. The construction series TKPS are developed for braking onto linear guides.

The material combination of linear guide and contact section mean the linear guide won't be damaged by the con-tact section. To avoid damage from contamination with chips (chips between contact section and linear guide) the elements can be fitted with original seals from the respective linear guide manufacturer and longitudinal seals as accessories.

In case of effects from a heavily polluted enviroment or from cooling liquid, seals should be used as well. When used as brakes, the front-side seals decrease the reaction time of the clamping element. In order to guarantee the life time of these seals, follow the corresponding instructions by the respective linear guide manufacturer. Details on the length of the brake path to be expected can be supplied by our technical advisers. Thecomputations are based on serial tests as well as our experience in the industry.

Variations:The TK construction series has different possibilities. For screwing the elements from underneath a distanceplate is necessary. Seals are recommended for harshwork environments.

Connection possibilities:The basic version TKPS is fitted with air connections onboth sides. This means that the air connection and theair-release filter can be moved over to the opposite side. In addition, there is the possibility of admittingthe air from the front (the PLUS version cannot be connected at the front).

Higher supporting forces by PLUS connection:By insertion of a 5/2-(free of overflow) or a 5/3-valveit is possible to support the spring power with pneumatical pressure. By this connection variation thestated supporting force will be increased upto 2.5-times. The connection takes place according to theprestated plan.

When PLUS air is used the air-release filter is replacedby connecting a second pneumatic pipe. The seriesBWPS/TKPS are fitted with integrated quick-action ventilating valves according to the size of the unit.

SBDescription

Active without Pressure - Narrow, High design (S3):The Clamping and Braking Element with spring-loadedenergy storage

The SB construction series is based on dual-effective wedge slide gear drive including a spring-loaded energy sto-rage for the process of unpressurized clamping and braking. The pistons connected in line release the spring pa-ckage at a pressure of > 6 bar. This model is specifically designed for use with narrow, high slides.

The material combination of linear guide and contact section mean the linear guide won't be damaged by the con-tact section. To prevent damage by contamination with chips between contact section and linear guide the ele-ments can be fitted with original seals from the respective linear guide manufacturer and longitudinal seals as ac-cessories.

In case of effects from a heavily polluted enviroment or from cooling liquid, seals should be employed as well. Whenused as brakes, the front-side seals decrease the reaction time of the clamping element. In order to guarantee thelife time of these seals, follow the corresponding instructions by the respective linear guide manufacturer. AUDescription

New product for miniature section rails:The miniature clamping with spring-loaded energy storage AU.

The series AU was developed specifically for miniature guide rails. They are asymmetrically arranged with respect tothe rail axis. This arrangement makes it possible to keep to the standard dimension for guide carriages on one side. The series AU maximizes freedom for designers due to its small size. On the opposite side, a spring unit is integrated. The wrap-around clamp is floating, consequently there are no transverse forces in adjoining structures.

Hydraulic Super Heavy Load Clamping: A clamping element with the unique KW diaphragm technology.

The KW construction series is a hydraulically operated heavy load clamping device. The hydraulic oil pressurizes thelarge-surface contact areas directly onto the linear guide via a piston mechanism. A pre-tensioned reset spring enables short cycle times. The special diaphragm technology guarantees operational reliability. The pressure ranges from 20 bar to a 100 bar maximum for sizes 25 and 30. All sizes from 35 to 65 operate at a pressure rangefrom 30 bar to a maximum of 150 bar. The KW series features zero backlash and extremely low absorption volumesof maximum 3.8cm3per clamping operation. For more information visit www.zimmer-gmbh.com.

KBDescription

Hydraulic Heavy Load Brake:The braking and clamping element with KB diaphragm technology.

The KB construction series is a hydraulically operated heavy load brake. The hydraulic oil pressurizes the large-surface contact sections, which are equipped with special brake lining, onto the linear guide via a piston mechanism. Because of the material combination of linear guide and contact areas the linear guide cannot be damaged by the contact areas. In order to exclude damages through contamination with chips (chips between contact profile and linear guide rails) the elements can be fitted with original from the respective linearguide manufacturer and longitudinal seals as accessories. A pre-tensioned reset spring enables short cycle times. The special diaphragm technology guarantees operational reliability. The pressure range from 20 bar to a 100 barmaximum for sizes 25 and 30. All sizes from 35 to 65 operate at a pressure range from 30 bar to a maximum of 150bar. The KB series features zero backlash and extremely low absorption volumes of maximum 3.8cm3 per clampingoperation.

Description

High Holding Loads - Electric Drive: The electric clamping element MKE.

The MKE has been developed from the MK series. The clamping force is generated using our conventional wedgeslide gear. The electronic componentry consists of two parts, the part integrated into the clamping element and thetriggering electronics. By monitoring the current electronically the required holding force is achieved. The functio-nal principle of self-locking makes clamping without electric current possible, (i.e. in the released or clamped state) only the control voltage is applied. The element is available with a cable or as standard elementwith a connector, on request.

spring-loaded energy storage

Short reaction times. Electric drive. Depressurized-active.The clamping and braking element with light spring-loaded energy storage MBES.

The electromechanical drive moves the wedge slide gear against the spring-action in the longitudinal direction andstretches the spring rod. The catch mechanism locks the spring-loaded energy storage. By removing the current sup-ply the spring action is released. Force is thus transmitted by a wedge slide gear, thus the high clamping forces areproduced. The integrated flexible coupling allows for a floating connection between the element and linear guide withoutcompromising rigidity. Lock and release are conveyed by a signal.
