Photo-engraved concrete
Paul Sabatier University is on the south-ern edge of Toulouse and has longestablished itself as the largest universityin South-West France for the sciences.
The library was built in the 1970s and wasno longer adequate for rising studentnumbers, nor did it meet the standardsrequired of a modern media and informa-tion centre. Extension of the existingbuilding was therefore required.
The architect contracted to design theextension, Richard Milani of Toulouse-based Espagno & Milani, has designed abuilding which stands out clearly fromthe rest of the campus and at the sametime offers a direct indication of itsintended purpose.
The extension to the library emerges fromthe existing building and conforms to thecampus’ orthogonal arrangement. A rec-tangular structure rises up from the fully-glazed ground floor. The first thing tocatch the eye of visitors and passers-byis the unusual texture of the concretefaçade.
Depending on the incident sunlight andthe angle from which the building isviewed, various photographs symbolical-ly depicting local industries and themajor scientific disciplines at theUniversity are visible.
This unusual design is made possible by the RECKLI photo-engraving system, which has, since its launch, evolved into a highly-regarded, successfullyemployed process for projecting pho-tographs onto concrete façades. Variousreferences have already been realizedwith this system that has won the MostInnovative Product Award at the World ofConcrete Show 2009 in Las Vegas.
The photo-engraving technique is a com-puter-guided process for transferringimage information to panels using millingtechniques. The process starts by scan-ning a template image and converting itinto a 256-colour greyscale image.
To transfer the image to the material, thegreyscale values are used to generate aprocessing file containing milling com-mands for a special CNC milling ma -chine. A correspondingly milled modelthan serves as a template for manufac-turing RECKLI® formliners. The elasticity, quality and reproducibility of these form-liners make the process of producing aphotograph-like concrete surface aes-thetically and economically feasible. Therelief-like surface of the photo-engraving
produces an image of the originalthrough light and shadow effects. As withevery structure, the photo-engravingcomes to life through the play of light andshadow on the façade. The photographsappear more clearly when light is comingfrom the side than when it is coming fromthe front or when the concrete is in shad-ow. The movement of the sun throughoutthe day thus gives rise to changing imageeffects on the façade. In the interior of abuilding, the effect can be accentuatedby the use of artificial light.
The technique can be deployed in a widerange of applications, since almost anyimage available in a standard graphicalformat can be used. By scaling the origi-nal image, it is possible to manufacturephoto-engraving formliners of any sizerequired.
The architect selected 8 different pho-tographs. These are made up of separatemodules each 2.4 x 1.2 m in size. Thetotal size of the photographs varies fromone module (e.g. E=MC2) to 8 modules(e.g. Marie Curie). A detailed façade plan
determines the precise configuration ofthe façade and specifies both completephotographs and repeats of individualmodules, giving the impression of a con-tinuous photo-collage.
RECKLI delivered a total of 36 differentelastic photo-engraving formliners to theMidi Préfa Industries factory in Graulhet. One concrete element is generally up to6 modules high and one module wide. Inorder to make the setup on the produc-tion table as flexible as possible, the 36RECKLI photo-engraving formliners wereeach glued onto plywood sheets andthen combined according to the requiredconfiguration of the concrete elements.Profiles were placed between the indivi -dual formliners to create a fake joint inorder to accentuate the modules.
The close collaboration between archi-tects Espagno & Milani, construction firmEiffage, concrete precasters Midi PréfaIndustries and RECKLI has resulted in animpressive reference building and illus-trates the almost unlimited design possi-bilities of the RECKLI system.
