Chayei Soro - Bis Hundert Und Tzvanzig
R eb Chaim Gelb was an outstanding bal chesed who spent his
entire life strengthening Yiddishkeit and performing chesed for
others. He was a resident of Williamsburg, Brooklyn at a time when most
Jews there were not frum, and worked tirelessly to strengthen all aspects
of Jewish observance. At a young age, he quit his job so he could devote
all his time to performing acts of chesed and tzedaka. His wife, who was
a full partner in Rav Chaim's lifetime of chesed, willingly supported the
family. In the mid-twentieth century, modern American values were al-
ready slowly seeping into the Jewish community. Rav Chaim was not
pleased with the increase in broken marriages, and was concerned with
the negative impact on Klal Yisrael. Always the man of action, he refused
to accept the situation silently. At every wedding that he attended, he
would stand on a chair after the chuppah was over, and make an an-
nouncement in a loud voice: "A contract for 120 years!" Whereupon the
guests would shout "Amen!" and Rav Chaim would step down from the
chair, satisfied that he had taken some action to uphold the value of
sh’lom bayis and a lasting marriage.
Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Cohen

Shabbat host, by agreeing to take one additional guest (or more) a month to either
Shabbat meal, please e-mail Yehudit Garmaise at [email protected]. Reclaiming
Shabbat will resume Nov. 17 and 18.
SECURITY NOTICE #ONGUARD:
NO ONE has permission to use the back gate of the yard to enter or exit the shul.
Anyone doing so is unnecessarily compromising the security of OUR shul for his or
her own convenience. Our highly trained and armed (and expensive) security guard
has told us this is dangerous and wasteful to do so. He is stationed at the gate on
Doheny and that is the only place where it is permitted to leave and enter, until the
shul has been evacuated. Warning: you may be billed for the security of that
week if you break this rule.
THANK YOU
-To Bijan Ghanouni for donating fruits and vegetables to the shul.
-To Conrad Saks for layening this week’s parsha.
-To Az Aharon and his daughter, Tiffy, for delivering the Tomchei Shab-
bos route this week.
-To Peter and the Milky Way staff for hosting our monthly Date Night on
Tuesday, attended by 13 Young Couples! Speak to Justin Levi for details
about our next Date Night
