So
Hans Dagobert Bruger (1894 – 1932) publizier-
Lute Suite No. 1∗No autograph exists (any more) from Johann Sebas-tian Bach’s Suite E Minor (BWV 996). But thereare copies.1,2The time of origin can only be estimated. (Com-
posed probably between 1707 and 1717 in Wei-mar.)3 (“The Suite may have been conceived inBach’s early years in Coethen or Weimar, or evenearlier, . . . ”)4 (“. . . Bach’s Cöthen period, more spe-cifically about 1722.”)5
The compositions BWV 995, 996, 997, 998, 999,1000, 1006a from Bach can be addicted to the lute, implicitly or caused of evidentiary facts.6
But, it is indeed questionable if the lute suiteNo. 1 (BWV 996) was originally composed for thelute. It could also be attached to the cembalo orthe lautenwer(c)k (lute-clavier, lute-harpsichord), akeyboard instrument (partially or complete) withgut strings, that was at least since 1740 in Bach’spersonal estate. On a manuscript there is a post-script ”aufs Lauten Werck” with another handwri-ting, probably added later on.
Also content-related misgivings are stated. In themovements Presto, Courante and especially Giguethe structures seem to lead to the assumption thatit might be composed for a keyboard instrument.4And the key is used as an argument: “BWV 996is written in E Minor which is highly unsuitable, wellnigh unplayable on the baroque lute which istuned in D Minor.”2
Francisco Tárrega (1852 – 1909) was the first orat least one of the first guitarists arranging trans-criptions from Bach’s works and releasing them tothe public. But not from the lute works.
Agustín Barrios (1885 – 1944) was worldwide oneof the first guitarists making audio-records. A Bachrecording has survived.
At the beginning of the 20th c. Hans DagobertBruger (1894 – 1932) published an edition with se-ven Bach compositions for lute, more precise for thelute guitar.7 Andrés Segovia (1893 – 1987) heardthis and asked Bruger, if he could use it as a basisfor his own transcriptions.8
