Nomenklaturvorschlag für die ägyptologisch wichtigsten Gesteine
Die folgende dreisprachige Liste enthält die Nomenklatur der für die Ägyptologie wichtigsten Gesteine, die wir als verbindlich vorschlagen möchten. Wenn auch im einzelnen eine Gesteinsbezeichnung kontrovers diskutiert werden kann, wie z. B. die Bezeichnung Calcit-Alabaster (Ägyptischer Alabaster) verso Travertin (Harrell 1990, Klemm u. Klemm 1991), so sollte man sich aber generell auf eine die besondere Gesteinsgeschichte Ägyptens berücksichtigende und international möglichst einheitliehe Bezeichnung der am häufigsten verwendeten Gesteine verständigen. Dies muB dort, wo mehrere Varietäten oder flieBende Übergänge innerhalb einer Gesteinsgruppe vorliegen, zwangsläufig zu Vereinfachungen petrographischer Bezeichnungen führen, die aber zu vertreten sind, solange sie wissenschaftlich korrekt bleiben und gleichzeitig die Belange der Ägyptologie nicht aus dem Blick verlieren. Da in Ägypten die meisten Gesteinsarten während ihres gesamten Verwendungszeitraumes stets in denselben Steinbruchrevieren gewonnen wurden, sind sie zusätzlich durch ihre Herkunftsgebiete definiert, was ebenfalls eine zu komplizierte Nomenklatur entbehrlich macht.
Für die ägyptischen Kalksteine gilt, daB im wesentlichen wohl nur drei Typen ohne eingehendere Untersuchungen vom Laien unterschieden werden können: feinkörnig, fossilreich (wobei es sich dabei in den meisten Fällen um Nummuliten handeIt) und hart (d. h. durch postdiagenetische Calcifizie-
rung nachverfestigt). Weitergehende Unterscheidungen der zahlreichen Kalksteintypen sind nur mit den in diesem Buch beschriebenen Methoden möglich.
Analog verhält es sich mit den zahlreichen im Buch beschriebenen Varietäten des Granits von Aswan. Davon sind lediglich die wichtigsten, weil am häufigsten verwendeten Typen hier aufgelistet, was gleichermaBen für alle übrigen hier aufgeführten Gesteinsarten zutrifft.
Vereinzelt auftretende Sondergesteine, von denen uns keine Steinbrüche bekannt sind, wurden nicht in diese Liste aufgenommen.
Bei den wichtigsten in römischer Zeit verarbeiteten ägyptischen Gesteinen wurden freundlicherweise von L. Lazzarini (Rom) die antiken Namen hinzugefügt (nach Piinius d. Ä. Naturalis historia XXXVI; Vetruvius, De igne VII, 11-14 und Diocletians Preisedikt.) Die italienischen Steinmetzbezeichnungen sind den Werken von R. Gnoli (1989) und H. Mielsch (1985) entnommen.
Die im Annex aufgeführten Gesteinsnamen aus kleinen Steinbrüchen der römischen Zeit sind der Literatur entnommen, die entsprechenden Gesteine sind von uns im einzelnen nicht untersucht worden.
Die Angaben zu den Vorkommen bezeichnen jeweils gröBere geographische Räume. Detaillierte Beschreibungen der einzelnen Steinbrüche finden sich in den entsprechenden Passagen im Buch.

Erläuterungen für den Gebrauch der Farbtafeln:
Die FarbabbiIdungen sind im MaJ3stab 1 : 1 erstellt, d. h. die Gesteinsanschnitte sind in OriginalgröJ3e abgebiIdet.
Die Autoren waren bemüht, die wichtigsten Gesteinstypen hierfür auszuwählen. Selbstverständlich ist die farbliche und strukturelle Variationsbreite der verschiedenen ägyptischen Gesteinstypen bei weitem gröJ3er, als das hier gezeigt werden kann. Dennoch sind wir der Hoffnung, daJ3 mit HiIfe dieser Farbtafeln die meisten der a1tägyptischen Steinobjekte nomenklatorisch richtig angesprochen werden können.
