Closure cuts 2019-20 school year short
To prevent the spread of the corona-virus, Gov. Asa Hutchinson announced in April that public schools across the state would be closed for on-site instruc-tion for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.
“The continued spread of COVID-19 throughout the nation does not give me confidence that our educators, parents, and, most importantly, our students would be safe if schools were to resume on-site instruction in April,” Hutchinson said in his announcement. “Although on-site in-struction has been discontinued until the 2020-2021 school year, it is critical that our students continue to learn at home.”
With students no longer having tra-ditional classes, school officials began making plans for graduation ceremonies.
On April 25, Hutchinson and state Ed-ucation Secretary Johnny Key announced that no traditional in-person high school
graduation can be held until at least July 1 because of the pandemic.
“In some communities, they want to go ahead and do something in the nor-mal time and in that case, we are going to allow them to create non-traditional, either by remote means, by digital means, by video," Johnny Key said. “There are a number of techniques that schools have already started exploring.”
Local school district officials, to com-ply with these requirements, have decid-ed to postpone traditional graduation cer-emonies or host unique ceremonies.
“I’m very sympathetic because I have a granddaughter who is a senior in high school this year, but it’s really a risk whenever you bring thousands of parents and students together in one assembly,” Hutchinson said.

OUACHITA SCHOOLStudents to participate in drive-through ceremony
Ouachita High School seniors will cel-ebrate graduation during a drive-through ceremony.
Graduation will be held at 6:30 p.m. May 18 in the high school parking lot.
The parking lot will open at 6 p.m. with traffi c being limited to only one car per graduate.
Graduates will be called to the stage to receive their diploma and they can be accompanied by two parents.
Personal protective equipment will need to worn at all times when outside the vehicle, except to take a picture. PPE will
be provided upon arrival. During the ceremony, all other peo-
ple should remain in their vehicles at all times.
For those who are un-able to attend, the ceremony will be live streamed on Facebook.
“We realize that there are a lot of people who regularly attend grad-uation, but due to limited parking space
and the circumstances with the COVID-19 virus, we will have to limit attendance to one vehicle per graduate,” a school offi cial said.
Traditional ceremony planned for Poyen graduates
Poyen High School seniors were given the opportunity to vote on how to celebrate graduation. They decided on a traditional ceremony.
“While no scenario is perfect at this time that is still the best option and what the majority of our seniors have voted for,” according to school offi cials.
The graduation is tentatively planned to take place Aug. 7 or 8.
“Our intent is to not have to limit attendees, so everyone who wants to cele-brate with our seniors will be allowed and we will pick a date with the least resec-tions on at-tendees that is possible due to regulations,” according to the graduation announcement.
“We know celebrating our
students’ successes is a highlight for our school and community.”

Seniors choose traditional graduation optionThe Bismarck High School Class of
2020 was given the opportunity to chose how they wanted to celebrate graduation.
Receiving 41 votes, the winner was a traditional graduation. Eight students voted for a drive-through gradu-ation and three voted for a virtual graduation.
The ceremony has been sched-uled for 7 p.m. July 28 at the Hot Spring Convention Center.
Superintendent Susan Kissire said school leaders are excited and optimistically looking forward to the ceremony.
“The additional space provided at the Convention Center will also allow for social distancing between families, thus providing additional safety measures,” according to the announcement.
The school offi cials added that if the governor’s requirements change, the
district will prepared for a Plan B drive-through ceremony.
“We understand that many students will be leaving for college, some out-of-state, and the military so we want to be
sure to recognize and honor our graduates even if the gover-nor’s mandate is extended,” according to the announcement.
Kissire noted in the announce-ment that the district attempted to host the gradu-ation at Ouachita Baptist Univer-sity.
“When we contacted our usual venue to reschedule, the Jones Center at OBU, we were told that they are not scheduling any gradua-tions at this time so we then had to begin searching for an alternate location which would be available and have an open date. It was quite a challenge during these unsure times,” Kissire said.

MALVERN SCHOOLVirtual awards ceremony,
traditional graduation plannedThe Malvern High School Class of
2020 will be celebrated in a virtual award ceremony along with a traditional graduation.
According to the latest update, a vir-tual awards ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 22. The virtual event which will be publicized on district social me-dia pages will acknowledge and cele-brate accomplishments of seniors.
As part of the ceremony, a senior vid-eo will also be debuted for the first time following the awards presentations.
The district is also planning a tradi-tional ceremony tentatively set for July 18.
District officials are creating a de-tailed graduation program for students to have as a keepsake.
“We hope to have as close to a tradi-tional graduation ceremony as possible on this date within the social distancing
parameters that are in place at the time. We promise to be creative and provide the best experience for our seniors,” ac-cording to district officials.
More detailed information about the ceremony will be released closer to the July 18 date.
“We understand this is not the typical MHS senior experience, but we are all working hard to celebrate our 2020 se-niors in the best way possible. We will do everything in our power to give the seniors the proper send off they earned and deserve,” according to the school’s recent update.
Along with their last year of high school being cut short, the Malvern se-niors also had to complete their high school career at a satellite campus while Malvern High School is currently being remodeled, Superintendent Brian Golden said in a previous interview.

“When we contacted our usual venue to reschedule, the Jones Center at OBU, we were told that they are not scheduling any gradua-tions at this time so we then had to begin searching for an alternate location which would be available and have an open date. It was quite a challenge during these unsure times,” Kissire said.
