Language study
• A noun is usually proceeded by a definite article, der/die/das, an indefinite or negative article (k)ein(k)ein, (k)eine, or some other determiner eg dieser/diese/dieses, which indicates its role in the sentence.
• The form of the determiner varies according to the gender (masculine/feminine/neuter), number (singular/plural) and case (nominative/accusative/dative/genitive) of the following noun.

What is a determiner?
• Determiners are function words that come before a noun and any adjectives associated with the noun. They include the definite articles der/die/das (the); the indefinite articles einein/e (a/an); the demonstratives dieser/diese/dieses (this); the possessives meinmein/e, deindein/e etc (my, yours, etc). In German the ending of the determiner must agree with the gender, number (singular or plural) and case of the noun it precedes. The determiner thus acts as a marker, helping to show the function of the noun in the sentence.
