Hrtext 2: Titanic [Cobh and the Titanic Trail]Good evening everybody and welcome to the Titanic Trail here in Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland. You have pressed button E and are now listening to this cassette in English. This audio tour will give

you a lot of information about the Titanic and about the town of Cobh.

Cobh? You have probably seen the movie Titanic with Leonardo di Caprio and Kate Winslet, but havenever heard of Cobh. Well, you see, in the past Cobh was called Queenstown, and it is here that theTitanic picked up its last passengers before setting off on its tragic trip across the Atlantic to America.

At the moment you are inside the Cobh Heritage Centre. On the wall in front of you there are severalphotographs of the Titanic. In 1912 it was the biggest and most elegant hotel ship in the world, andpeople said it was also the safest.

If you look at the wall on your left, you will see a map showing the route of the Titanic. On themorning of 11th April 1912 the newly built ship made its final stop here at the port of Queenstown,

Ireland, before crossing the Atlantic on her very first and only voyage. Leaving Queenstown theTitanic had 2,206 people on board.

Now please turn around and step outside to admire the beautiful St. Colmans Cathedral up on thehillside. This view was the last thing these passengers saw as they left the harbour. Little did they

know that this wonderful ship would hit an iceberg a few days later and sink. Now go down to the waterfront, find a seat, and listen to the story of one of those passengers: MaggieMadigan, an Irish woman. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, you will hear the ghost MaggieMadigan telling her own story.

    H-E-L-L- O-O-O, my n-a-m-e is Maggie Madigan.

I was born in 1890 here in Cobh, or what we called Queenstown, where life was very hard and simple. My friends and I always dreamt of going to America. We saved every extra penny we could, andfinally in April 1912 we were lucky enough to get 3rdclass tickets for the Titanic. On the morning of 11th April we made our way to the pier right in front of you. There it was theTitanic. It was like a floating city! The main deck had beautiful shops and attractions. I was so excited.

Maybe I would meet a good-looking millionaire and be rich for the rest of my life!

But we were travelling 3rd class. No millionaires down there. Still, we had lots of fun with music andparties! However, some passengers were also telling terrible stories about the Titanic, saying that itwould sink. But didnt the newspapers say it was unsinkable?

On 14th April, just before midnight, we were thrown out of our beds onto the floor. What hadhappened? They said the Titanic had hit an iceberg and was filling up with water. Put on yourlifejackets! Put on your lifejackets! we heard. We managed to get up on deck. Although it wasextremely hard for third-class passengers to get into a lifeboat, I finally made it, and we rowed away

from the sinking Titanic. Everywhere people were screaming and shouting for help. Then there was aterrible explosion and the lights slowly went out. The unsinkable Titanic sank. I never saw my friendsagain. We were on the lifeboats for hours and it was freezing cold. At about 4 oclock in the morning we were

picked up by another ship and taken to NY. New York, the city of my dreams. But you know, not asingle one of my dreams ever came true.

Of the 2206 people on board the Titanic, only 706 survived. And Maggie was one of them. However, she never returned to Ireland during her lifetime, only her ghost has come back in order to keep the

story of the Titanic alive . . . Thank you, Maggie.

Now lets move on. [VOICE TRAILING AWAY]

Hrtext 3: A Year in the USA with FSA

Jackie: Hello, and welcome to all our new students who have decided to spend a year here inthe USA. My name isJackie Hanson and I work for FSA, theForeign Student

Association in southern California. Weve asked two exchange students from Europeto tell you a bit about the experiences they have had here so far. This is ThomasSchulz from Berlin

Thomas: Hi everyone!Jackie: andFiona Brown from Swansea, in Wales.Fiona: Hello.Jackie: And we have also invited Thomass host mom, Sharon Miller, to be with us today.Sharon: Good afternoon.

Jackie: Before we start talking about Fionas and Thomass experiences, Id like to ask you,Sharon: Why do you take in foreign students to live with you and your family for a

year?Sharon: Well you see, I was an exchange student in Germany when I was young and that

experience had such a positive influence on my life. So, I decided to give young peoplethe chance to live with an American family and learn about us and the way we live.

Ive had foreign students stay with us for many years now, which has been great for

my son as well. Hes 15 and an only child, and hes learned so much from them. Itswonderful.

Jackie: Have there been any serious conflicts?Sharon: With Thomas? Oh, no! Hes perfect. But, ah, last year I had a German girl who gave

me lots of problems. She didnt accept our family rules about going out. I mean, weonly wanted to know where she was going and when shed be back.

Thomas: . . . and we should call you if were going to be late.Sharon: Exactly. Is that too much to ask?Thomas: I dont think so.

Fiona: Having to be home by 11 p.m. even on weekends is a bit hard, dont you think?Jackie: Its not just an FSA rule, Fiona, its also a regulation here in L.A. You cant be out on

the streets after 11 if you are under 18. And that is for security reasons, since many

areas are not safe at night.Fiona: Well, I still think American parents worry too much. Its the same with the driving

licence. Why dont they allow us to get our drivers licence while were here? Here in

the US, having a car is a MUST. Without a car, youre stuck. Legally its possible totake the test because American kids can drive when theyre 16. And, you know, it costsnext to nothing.

Jackie: Well, let me explain, its not the parents who are against it. Its one of the FSA rulesbecause we have the responsibility for your safety while youre over here.

Thomas: Youre right, but with me it makes Sharons life more complicated because she needsto take me everywhere. But I must say shes really great about it. Sharon is alwaysthere for us. Like, her son and I are both taking a surfing class thatstarts at 7:30every morning, and she always drives us to the ocean with all our surfing equipment. Then she comes back 2 hours later to drive us to school. Shes fantastic!

Sharon: Thanks for the compliment, Thomas.Jackie: By the way, many of our FSA students are really surprised that surfing can be a

subject at American schools.Thomas: Yeah. American schools offer so many really cool subjects that would be impossible to

have in German schools, like shop where you learn to repair cars, or childcare. And its not only surfing, there are so many other kinds of sports that you can do atschool.

Sharon: Right. You know, many high school students try to get on a sports team because ifyoure good at sports, its a way to get the money you need for college. And going tocollege is so expensive here in the US.

Jackie: We also like to see our FSA students get involved in sports. Its a great way to makelots of friends.

Thomas: Yeah, I got on the basketball team and . . .Fiona: Thomas, the giant our secret weapon!Thomas: Oh, come on, Fiona!

Jackie: Can you tell us some other things that our new FSA students should know about beforethey come over here?

Sharon: Well, most of your students are between 16 and 18, arent they?Jackie: Thats right.

Sharon: I think the new students should know that they may be allowed to drink wine or beer atthat age in France or Germany, but here alcohol is taboo for them.

Jackie: Good point, Sharon. Teenage drinking can really be a big problem. Unfortunately, there always seems to be a lot of alcohol at most teen parties, even though thedrinking age is 21. But thank heavens our FSA students only drink milk, right?

Fiona: Milk it is.Thomas: Right on. But seriously, this thing with ages is really strange. Kids can drive at 16, but

are not legally allowed to buy cigarettes until they are 18. Of course, younger kidssmoke they just get someone else to buy the cigarettes for them.

Jackie: Smoking is, in fact, a big problem we have with our exchange students. On the FSAapplication form, if students say they smoke, they must guarantee in writing that theywill NOT SMOKE during their stay in the USA. Some very strict exchange

organisations will send kids home for smoking. Im glad I havent had to do that yet;up to now a long talk with my students has been enough.

Fiona: You know whats really strange? The image people here have of teenage smokers. Ifyou smoke, you automatically belong to the kids who dont do well in school. At leastat the school Thomas and I go to it is not in to smoke, but it is in to be good atschool.

Jackie: Talking about in, Im not sure what its like in Europe, but the way you dress isimportant for both American boys and girls. The trendy students, for example, lookdown on smokers, and they also make sure they are wearing the latest style.

Fiona: Well, I found out the hard way. Now I know what it means to wear the wrong clothes. Iwore my favourite black leather jacket to school and people who used to be friendlystarted avoiding me. I finally found out what my jacket meant to them: That I belongedto a certain crowd the smoking, drug-taking losers. I know its stupid, but I decidedto leave my jacket at home.

Thomas: Well, clothes are important for lots of kids in Germany, too, but I dont think we putpeople into categories quite that easily. I certainly dont - because I dont care aboutclothes anyway.

Jackie: This is certainly very interesting and important to know for our new students. Nowlets go on to our next topic, which is travel expenses and how to get from one side ofthe USA [FADE]
