Fucoidan
3
• Sulfated polysaccharide (wide range of molecular weights)
• Found in brown algae and brown seaweedsuch as mozuku, kombu, bladderwrack, wakame and hijiki
Purpose and characteristics
• Protection against water-borne pathogens and other environmental challenges (e.g. osmotic stress).
• Fucoidans are polysaccharides characterized by a complex molecular structure and varying degrees of sulphation and acetylation.
4
Structure
• Extraction, species, plant maturity, origin....
• Fucose backbone

Extraction, Extraction, Extraction, ……• Optimizing extraction and
purification procedure of fucoidanfrom F. vesiculosus (bladderwrack)
10
Yield across different genera and regions
• Extraction and purification of fucoidan from three Fucus species:
- F. vesiculosus
- F. serratus
- F. evanescens
• Harvested in Summer and Autumnof 2017.
