Jm MMove over 20-30-40- and 50-some-

things of the world, theres a lot moresenior citizens than there used to be

those 65 and older now make up thelargest part of the countrys populationpie.

The same is true for the St. Louisarea, which ranks fth out of the top

35 cities in terms of the percentage ofadults who are 65 and older, accordingto recently released U.S. Census data. But its not just the baby boomers whoare gaining in numbers those who are85 and older are making their presenceknown, too. In St. Charles County, forexample, the number of seniors 85 andolder has almost doubled in the past10 years.

A similar surge is happening at thestate level. The number of Missourians

65 and over increased by roughly 11percent from 2000-2010, but the pro-portion of the population age 85 andolder increased at an even faster paceof 15 percent. In 2000, roughly 99,000people 1.8 percent of the states totalpopulation were 85 and older. Whenthe census was conducted in 2010,nearly 114,000 Missouri residentswere 85 and older, comprising 1.9 per-cent of the states population.

Between 8,000 and 10,000 babyboomers are hitting 65 (years old) ev-ery day, but the fastest growing popu-lation are individuals over the age of80, said Barth Holohan, who is thefounder and president of Des Peres-

based Continuum, which provides pri-vate duty home care, nursing, retire-ment community programs, personalemergency response systems and geri-atric care management to senior citi-zens.

    Aging As A Change Agent

The fact that people are living lon-ger inuences trends such as what

type of housing is built to how fami-lies will manage the care of their eldercounterparts.

The marketplace is changing as itpertains to care for older adults, Ho-lohan said. Thirty to 40 years ago youhad a nursing home or you had people

getting care in their home, but usu-ally care in the home was done by aloved one. When people would stay inthe hospital it was for a long period oftime. Now, people are in the hospitalfor a short period of time, go to rehab, then go home with home care and theservices you have available to you inthe home are extensive.

The in-home care industry is thriv-

ing, and Holohans company is proof ofthat.

When we started 10 years ago I

was the rst employee ... now we haveover 200 staff and service over 400 cli-ents, he said, adding that growth inthe industry has exploded in the pastve years.

People want to stay in their homeand pay out-of-pocket for services. Youwill see this trend increase as babyboomers age and need more care.

Seniors Home Care, which has beenspecializing in private duty home carefor senior citizens in St. Louis since1987, also has seen business increase, especially in the past ve years, said

    Ryan Whittington, director of opera-tions.

We have have more than doubled

our service over the last three years,he said.

    Seniors Home Care has specically

seen an increase in the transportationneeds of its clients.

They (clients) want to stay homeas long as possible and remain inde-pendent, so theres been a big increasein the need for transportation servicesbecause maybe they have a loss of eye

sight or had a hip replacement andcant drive, Whittington said.

With an increase in the detection of

Alzheimers and Dementia, the com-panys employees have been providingmore services such as preparing mealsand setting out task reminders for cli-ents, he added. Theres also been anuptick in the companys Express ClubService, which allows clients to orderin-home services a la carte within 48hours.

It gives clients exibility, Whit-tington said, and thats been a biggrowth place for us.

    Senior Living Complexes

The ip side of in-home care comes

in the form of retirement, independent-living and assisted-living communi-

ties. Senior housing complexes are indemand and on the rise.

The Webster Groves, Kirkwood andAffton areas are no exception. Provi-sion Living, a $10.8 million assisted-living community at 45 E. Lockwood inWebster Groves, will open this year.

Aberdeen Heights, 575 Couch Ave-nue in Kirkwood, opened in September. The $179 million, 18-acre community

features 243 independent-living apart-ment homes with a variety of ameni-ties including restaurant-style dining,a tness center, salon and more. There

    also are 30 assisted-living apartments,15 memory-support suites and 38skilled-nursing rooms.

The Village at Mackenzie Place, located on the grounds of the former

Affton High School at 8520 MackenzieRoad, is slated for completion by theend of this month. The project con-sists of four separate but connectedbuildings with 121 independent-livingapartments.

Rita Vicary, administrator of mar-keting for Lutheran Senior Services, said the senior housing industry hasseen growth over the past decade.

Lutheran Senior Services hasgrown quite a bit in 10 years, she said.

We have nine continuing care retire-ment communities that provide inde-pendent living, assisted living, memo-ry care, skilled nursing and short stayrehab services all on one campus. Wealso have affordable housing and in-home services so we can meet the vari-ous needs of seniors.

Shes also noticed that companiesare trying to cater to individuals byproviding a variety of choices and ame-nities within senior living complexes. She said the Laclede Groves campus inWebster Groves is currently expandingits independent-living apartments andskilled nursing care center and creat-ing a town center with new ameni-

ties and several dining options. Were really focused on person-cen-

tered care, she said, noting Luther-an Senior Services is creating morehousehold-style care centers for skillednursing, which provide more of a fam-ily environment where residents canchoose daily activities to match theirpersonal preferences.

Holohan expects the senior housingcomplex and the in-home care industryto continue booming.

Over the next 10, 15, 20 yearswell see both of those segments growbecause theres going to be more andmore people needing the services, hesaid.

    Stuck In The Middle

Aging doesnt just affect those whoare getting older younger genera-tions feel it, too.

The rising numbers of people 85and older also means an increase incaregivers ones who are often seniorcitizens themselves.

One thing that were dealing withand have been over the last 10 yearsis the rising number of senior care giv-ers, said John Gamache, public rela-tions and resource development spe-cialist for the Mid-East Area AgencyOn Aging, which serves seniors in St.Louis, St. Charles, Franklin and Jef-ferson counties. There are people 60and over caring for a spouse or olderparents caring for their older parents,so youve got a 65-year-old couple car-ing for their 85-year-old parents.

Holohan has witnessed that trendand are working to help people inthose situations.

We do a lot of talks on family care-

givers in the workplace, Holohansaid. Over half of caregivers assist-ing a chronically ill loved one are overthe age of 50 and working full time,so many companies are trying to g-ure out how to assist this group withtools and resources because there issignicant downtime and productiv-ity loss due to the demands of being acaregiver.

Women between the ages of 40 and65 are particularly feeling the crunch,Holohan said.

Those women have kids theyrecaring for, theyre working and theyrecaring for their older parent itscalled the sandwich generation, he

    said.
