In order to bring the orchestra intomy world I decided to start from‘music’, or what we usually thinkabout as music, with melodies, har-monies, counterpoint etc, and thengradually stop the ‘music’, peelingits layers away so that one suddenlyfaces what is underneath, what is theundercurrent moving in the air onwhich it rides, which is where mymusic really starts. In this sense, thepiece is really trying to make the for-eign familiar. Indeed it does it tosuch extent that the familiar ‘music’becomes estranged in the middle ofthe piece ... because the music ofthe ‘underneath’ was really put inthe middle of the field of our atten-tion. Chaya Czernowin
The text of this work is based on alate poem by Georg Trakl, Klage, and on fragments of letters he sentto his publisher and friend, Ludwigvon Ficker. The line ‘Und es klagtdie dunkle Stimme über dem Meer’[Dark echoes sound above the seas]
was used as the starting point forthis work. I first thought about writ-ing this work when I saw a photo ofa mother walking around the shore, looking for her child’s body after theTohoku Earthquake and Tsunami on11 March 2011. I wanted to composea work where a woman could healher deep sorrow by singing it. Toshio Hosokawa
Toshio Hosokawa

This concerto for piano and choirwithout orchestra takes its inspira-tion from Mexican seals made in thepre-Hispanic era. The song cele-brates friendship, and a mix of joyand trepidation arising from con-
templation of the beauty and tran-sience of life. The correspondingNahuan expression ’Le visage, lecœur’ [The face, the heart] describesthe external and internal form of anindividual. Stanzas are alternatedwith commentary, creating a uni-verse characterised by the ‘ontologi-cal pessimism’ of the Aztecs, theirpropensity for heightened emotion, and their intense experiences of par-ticular moments in time.
The first movement Blue Water is ameditative attempt to describe thevast infinite blue water of the sea. Itis a joyful music, a piece describingthe impressions we have by thecheerful movements of the sea, in-cluding all the songs created by therises, silences and tides of the bluewaters. Black water is undoubtedlywhat takes place around a small lakeand its surroundings. It all happensat night. It is a piece written for thelake, silence, the moon and themoonlight. Making weird sounds, the instruments daxophone and wa-terphone add surprise to the atmos-phere. The third movement resem-bles the infinite flow of a river. Atthe end of this part, the members ofthe orchestra whisper the followingwords, each in their own language:‘Water gives life. Living comes fromwater and returns to water in theend. Water means life. Life origi-nates from water.’ Fazil Say
BlackWater charakterisiert den See unddie Ereignisse in seiner Umgebung. Wasser bedeu-tet Leben. Leben entsteht aus Was-ser.” Fazil Say

More than 60 years old, PriaulxRainier’s Movement for strings hasnever been performed. The workwas to have been premiered at the1953 St. Ives Festival which the com-poser organised along with SirMichael Tippett and the sculptorBarbara Hepworth, both of whomwere close friends. Rainier had writ-ten Movement in the winter of 1950-51 during a stay with Hepworth inSt. Ives. However, the performancewas cancelled – most likely becauseit was too hard for the players. Atlast, Movement will receive itsWorld Première at the 2013 BBCProms.

By the time Harry Partch composed his work Delusion of the Fury, thegreat experimenter and tonal explorer had fully developed his highly
differentiated scale system and designed specialised, unconventional instru-ments to realise the sounds of his imagination. For the European première of Delusion of the Fury at this year’s Ruhrtrien-nale festival, Cologne’s ensemble musikFabrik has constructed exact repli-cas of the 25 instruments required to perform this composition. This eventprovides a spectacular opportunity to explore Partch’s musical universe andexperience the hypnotic force of one of the most extraordinary and innova-tive American composers of the Twentieth Century.
Jahrhunderts in all seiner hypnotischen Kraft zu erleben.
