Gliederung des Vortrags
1. Fachkompetenz als Diskurskompetenz2. Empirische Untersuchung zum Zusammenhang
von „Fachlichkeit und Sprachlichkeit“ (DFG)3. Analyse fachlicher Versprachlichungsfähigkeit
(Fokus: Schreiben) - Einige Befunde4. Projekt des Europarat: „Languages of Education“5. Didaktische Möglichkeiten zur Unterstützung des
Sprachlernens als Fachlernen
3
4
A Simplified Model of Subject-Specific Discourse Competence
Content/ Knowledge Cognition/Proc.Comp.
Discourse CompetenceLanguage/Communic.Competence
5
Fachliche Diskurskompetenz
• (1) Fachwissen /Bedeutung /“Inhalt“• (2) Erkenntnisgewinnung/Methodenkompetenz• (3) Sprach- bzw. Kommunikationskompetenz• Methodenkompetenz/Mentale Aktivitäten steuert alles• Diskurskompetenz als Ganze realisiert sich in der
Bearbeitung und Lösung von Aufgaben/Problemen• Die Volition/das Wollen führt zur Akzeptanz der Aufgabe• Sprache ist zwar nur ein Kompetenzbereich, sie ist jedoch
zugleich konstitutiv für alle K.bereiche/Teilkompetenzen
6
Subject-specific discourse competence
Task
Methodological competence:
Identify demands of the task, activate and select relevant knowledge, combine with meanings constructed
Subject-matter knowledge:
Knowledge of standardised thematic patternsand semantic relations
Communicativecompetence:
Knowledge of social semiotic systems: linguistic, visual and mathematical forms of representation, and their conventional uses
Volition and motivation:
Willingness to accept a task and follow the conventions
7
Partizipation
• Entwickelt sich nicht ohne gezielte Unterstützung!
8
Components of Subject-Specific Communicative Competence (C 3)
1. Identifying, comprehending, and analysing given meaning/information, (re)structuring+integrating it into already existing concepts/knowledgestructures
2. Constructing+expressing new meaning in a cohe-sive+coherent way, producing linguistic, visual and mathematical forms of representation/“texts“
3. Exchanging+negotiating perceptions, meanings, positions with others (subj.-spec. argumentation)
9
Zus.hang: Bedeutung, Sprache, Denken
• Language is a tool for conceptualizing and structuring content , for constructing and linking information
• Language is basis for the thinking process/is used in it• Language leads to mental precision in verbalising, especially in
WRITING: only then is the construction of meaning completed!•
11
2. Mentale Aktivitäten/Prozesse• DESCRIBING (e.g. the main ideas of a text, or
writing a report about....): Defining, Naming, Identifying, Classifying, Summarising...
• EXPLAINING (e.g. an observation, or: the difference between ...)Analysing, Comparing, Structuring, Reasoning,
Concluding, Inferencing, Hypothesising
• EVALUATING (e.g. different aspects of GM...)Assessing, Evaluating, Positioning, Suggesting
12
3. Konventionelle Texttypen/Genres
• z.B. Beschreibungen• z.B. Erklärungen • z.B. Beurteilungen oder Bewertungen• z.B. Argumentieren in direkter mdl.
13
Zusammenhang von Inhalt, Prozess und Versprachlichung (revisited)
• Knowledge materialises in the (re)construction of meaning (concepts and their interrelationship),
• Cognition materialises in mental activities or processes, e.g. describing, explaining, concluding, evaluating
• Language materialises in different text types or genres
• All three components integrate into the realisation of task-dependent discourse functions (cf. Zydatiß, 2005; Fig. 3 and examples in slide 11-12 taken from him)
14
15
16
17
Zus.fass: Diskursfunktionen (DF)
18
Theoretische Basis / Einflüsse
• Systemisch-funktionale Sprachtheorie (Halliday)
• Sozio-semiotischer Ansatz der Halliday-Schule
• Genre-Ansatz (Textsorten) + Registertheorie
• Diskurstheoretischer und -funktionaler Ansatz
• Language Across the Curriculum (LAC)
• Content + Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)
19

3. Destruction of the tropical rain forestIn the last decades the destruction of the tropical rain forest has continuously increased. The following two figures show the extent of this destruction.According two Figure 4, the destruction of the tropical rain forest is highest in Asia. Comment critically on this statement by relating it to the information presented in Table 1.

4. Causes and effects of the destruction of the tropical rain forestIn this section, a chart that gives an overview of the causes and effects of the destruction of the tropical rain forest is presented.a)Complete the chart. Start by using the terms presented in the list below. b)Do all of them fit clearly into one of the categories? If not, why not?c)Some important causes and effects are not listed. Think about it and complete the chart: making charcoal, creating infrastructure, climatechanges, mining, extinction of species, road construction and settlement, slash and burn technique (by migrant farmers), agricultural plantations, clearing of forest for raising cattle, population growth, profit seeking, increase of the greenhouse effect, decrease of soil fertiliy, growth in capital
24
Task 6: SustainabilitySince the world summit of Rio de Janeiro in 1992 (Agenda 21) the principle of
sustainability has been globally accepted. This principle means that in terms of the use of natural resources, ecological, social and economic goals should be treated as
equally important. At the same time, the rights and needs of future generations should be respected, so that they are not disadvantaged in any way through the
exploitation of the resources.
Against the background of the aims of Agenda 21, how do you evaluate the following suggestion for a solution? Support your answer.
One possible way of protecting the tropical rain forest would
be to turn the remaining forests into conservation areas or national parks. This would mean that nature would be left to itself again, untouched by mankind. Only a limited number of people would then be allowed to enter restricted areas in
the parks along specials trails and accompanied by a ranger.
25
7. We and the rain forest
Fig. 5
Take a look at Figure 5 and explain in how far the following statement is true.
„The rain forest concerns us all“.
26
8. Extent to which one can personally contributeThis part deals with the question of what you can personally do to contribute to the protection of the tropical rain forest. First, give your opinion about the following statement by indicating the extent to which it is true for you. Then, support your decision. I can personally contribute to the protection of the tropical rain forest.

28
Holistische Skalierung von Diskursfunktionen: 6 Niveaustufen
• Extent to which the text addresses+solves the task in terms of meaning, process and text function required
• HOLISTIC Rating (Categories/Criteria): Extent to which the text/product/performance is CompleteCorrectConsistentRelevant
• CONTEXT: task requirements (thematic patterns + semantic relation) and discourse requirements (genre)
29
Task 6Level 6
There is a succinct and balanced evaluation of the suggestion. This is preceded or followed by succinct and comprehensive support that is fully consistent with the evaluation and that is based on a complete and a
correct application of the principle of sustainability in evaluating the suggestion. The argumentation is well-structured.
Level 5There is a clearly formulated and balanced evaluation of the suggestion. This is preceded or followed by clearly formulated and adequate support that is fully consistent with the evaluation and that is based on a correct application of the principle of sustainability in evaluating the suggestion. The argumentation is
generally well structured.Level 4
There is a balanced evaluation of the suggestion. The evaluation may be clearly formulated. There is sufficient support that may be clearly formulated, but that may show a limited degree of inconsistency. The
support is based on an application of the principle of sustainability in evaluating the suggestion. The application may not be entirely correct. The argumentation may be generally well structured.
Level 3There may be a balanced evaluation that may be clearly formulated. There is support that may be sufficient,
but that may show some degree of inconsistency. The support is to some extent based on a correct application of the principle of sustainability in evaluating the suggestion. The argumentation may be generally well
structured.Level 2
There is an evaluation of the suggestion that is unbalanced. The evaluation may be clearly formulated. There is support that may be sufficient, clearly formulated and consistent. However, the support is based on an
incorrect application of the principle of sustainability in evaluating the suggestion. The argumentation may show major deficiencies in terms of logical structuring and formulation.
Level 1There is no evaluation of the suggestion. There is only a discussion of Agenda 21 and/or the principle of
sustainability that may show major deficiencies in terms of logical structuring and formulation. Or, there is an evaluation that may be balanced, but there is no or hardly any support, or the support is not based on an application of the principle of sustainability at all. The evaluation may show major deficiencies
in terms of logical structuring and formulation.Level 0
None of the required discourse functions is performed. There is no evaluation of the suggestion and no support. The text is severely deficient in terms of logical structuring and formulation.Tabelle 1: Holistische Skala zur Erfassung der Realisierung von Diskursfunktionen

Analytische Bewertung fachlicher Sprachkompetenz
(Sieben Ordinalskalen)
Organisation of content/ordering + structuring text as a whole
Logical organisation of ideas into different structural units
Cohesiveness (effective linking of sentences and parts of it)
Sufficient+correct use of subject-specific register (terms/expressions)
Sufficient use of formal language (style, clear+succinct formulations)
Appropriate use of lexical-grammatical conventions /suff. variation
Correctness/accuracy of grammar, vocabulary, puctuation.
33
Scale 2.1: Sufficient and correct use of subject-specific terms and expressions
Descriptor Score
Subject-specific terms and expressions are consistently used where references are made to subject-related phenomena and are continuously used correctly.
4
Subject-specific terms and expressions are used to a large extent where references are made to subject-related phenomena and are used correctly in most instances. Only a limited number of subject-specific terms are lacking and/or a limited number of subject-specific terms and expressions included, are not used correctly. Incorrect terms might be used and/or collocations and spelling might be incorrect.
3
Subject-specific terms and expressions are used, but not to a sufficient extent and/or frequent errors are made in the application of subject-specific terms. About half of the references to subject-related phenomena are either made using terms and expressions that are not part of the subject-specific register and/or show errors in terms of the terms used, collocations and spelling.
2
The use of subject-specific terms and expressions is limited and/or only a limited number of terms and expressions included are used correctly. In most instances, there are errors in terms of the terms used, collocations and spelling.
1
No subject-specific terms or expressions are used. 0
34
SCALE 3) Cohesion / Linking of sentences and sentence parts
Descriptor Score
All the sentences are well linked, producing a clear flow of ideas and
statements.
3
The text is for the most part cohesive. However, there is a limited number of
instances of the insufficient or incorrect use of cohesive devices.
2
Cohesive devices are not used to a sufficient extent or are frequently used
incorrectly, so that there are quite a number of instances of disconnectedness.
This causes parts of the text to be fragmentary or choppy. One might also be
forced to reread parts of the text to follow the flow of ideas.
1
The text shows an almost complete lack of cohesion. It is so fragmentary that a
flow of ideas is obstructed.

Task 6 Sustainability: Evaluating the suggestion (of creating national parks) Benchmark 1 (2018):
I think it’s a great idea because the nature that is left should be kept and protected four the next generations.
Benchmark 2 (3025):I think this suggestion for a solution is the best.
Therefore only a few enterprises, which are also interested in the forest itself and not only in money would be allowed to enter this national park.
Moreover than the forest can regenerate itself. He will grow as he did it no in foreign times and then, I think, that the tropical rain forest will get bigger again and
a lot of animals are saved!Benchmark 3 (5006):
I think the suggestion to solve the problem is a good idea. The forest could grow again and would be safe. The government needs makes money with the po people
who visit the national parks and the Indians had a place to live.Benchmark 4 (3017)
The aims of Agenda 21 are to use natural resources ecological and social and economic goals should be treated as equal important. In addition to this, rights and needs of future generations should be respected and not disadvantaged. So I think, that the suggested solution is a good one, because if saves the forest and does not disadvantage following generations. So the aims of Agenda 21 are reached. The only thing is, that they can't use the wood of the rainforests any longer to earn
money, so that they have to keep their economy in mind.
38
3111: Task 2aImprovement of lexical choice, although the meaning is equal. The new variety, however, is
more scientific/explicit.Dt. Infolgedessen anstatt somit
English: As a consequence replacing thus
3116: Task 2aChange of a subject-specific term, but unfortunately to a wrong one.
Diagram (wrong term) instead of figure (would have been the correct one)
3125: Task 6Insertion of definition of sustainability (as taken from the material). But the syntactical
embedding is problematic because it makes the sentence too complex. The solution suggested I find very good because in this way the concept of sustainability
[INSERTION which says that in terms of the use of natural resources, ecological, social and economic goals should be treated as equally important END OF INSERTION] would be
fulfilled.
