4 VORWORT/PREFACE
Mastab genutzt. Dieses traditionelle Verfahren
bietet immer noch groes Innovationspotenzial.
Die jngeren Beschichtungsverfahren wie PVD,
PACVD, PECVD, Plasma-Polymerisation etc. haben zu
Innovationsschben in beinahe allen industriellen
Bereichen beigetragen und sind somit auch hier
nicht mehr wegzudenken.

Plasma surface technology: Still an innovation or alreadya tradition in industry?
Plasma surface technology emerged in Germany
with its first real application, plasma-nitriding
for wear and corrosion protection of machine
parts. It has been successfully applied on an
industrial scale for many years. This traditional
process still offers considerable potential for
innovation.
Newer coating processes such as PVD, PACVD,
PECVD, plasma polymerisation etc. have increased
the innovative power of almost all kinds of industry
and can therefore no longer be ignored.
It is remarkable in the long history of plasma
surface technology, that the most significant
developments took place in small and young

companies. Even today, these procedures are
mostly offered and developed by small and
medium-sized companies. German companies
and research institutes are still world leaders in
this area, although other countries have made
up considerable ground. Due to this strong
national and international position and importance,
forming the Industrial Plasma Surface Technology
working group within VDMA was the only logical
conclusion.
The aim of this brochure is to provide information
on high-level material processing and plant
engineering applications. The important part of
the German tool manufacture and mechanical
engineering industry was stabilised by modern
plasma technologies. Technologies like these will
be more and more required to keep up with
international technical contest and remain
competitive.
Also other branches of industry already recognised
the importance of plasma surface technologies,
and further will follow.
The companies introduced in this brochure
contributed significantly to the development of
plasma surface technology and will continue to
take part in the development of the high-tech
site, which is Germany.

internationalen technischen Wettlauf mithalten

Faszinierende Vielfalt
Unter den modernen Technologien hat sich die
Industrielle Plasma-Oberflchentechnik zu einem
bedeutenden Universalwerkzeug entwickelt.
In schon faszinierender Weise findet sie Anwendung
in so unterschiedlichen Bereichen wie der Herstel-

die Kommunikationstechnik der biokompatiblen
Beschichtung medizinischer Implantate, der Verg-
tung optischer Komponenten und vor allem beim
Verschlei- und Korrosionsschutz an Werkzeugen
und Maschinenbauteilen.

Suppliers of components, plants and services of
Industrial Plasma-Surface Technology, organised
within VDMA, set out their expertise with further
examples of applications of this guide. They
provide information on the range of products
and their possible applications. The suppliers of
Industrial Plasma-Surface Treatment Technology
commend themselves as competent contacts
and advisors in decisions for purchasers, production
planners and project managers in selecting
products, processes and production-integrated
solutions to problems.
Fascinating diversity
Among modern technologies, industrial surface
treatment technology has developed into an
important universal tool. Quite amazingly, it has
found appliances in quite diverse areas such as
the manufacture of data carriers and display
systems for information technology, biocompatible
coating of medical implants, surface treatment
of optical components and most notably in wear
and corrosion protection on tools and machine
components.
Today highly resistant thin coatings are highly
useful for almost all machine engineering sectors.
Modern industry increasingly demands more
rapid processes, light construction and compact
construction methods. At the same time, high
quality demands and environmental require-
ments must be met. With this complex set of
requirements, materials soon reach their limits.

Current material and production technology
therefore increasingly rests on the key function
of surfaces.
The surface does it!
Constantly increasing demands on the performance
of products and increasing competition demand
separate independent optimisation of basic
material and surface. In selecting the basic
material, its specific weight, formability or optical
transparency and not least price, for example,
play a deciding role. More is required of the surface.
Tools and highly stressed machine components
must withstand tribologic stresses, while
architectural glass should reflect heat radiation
and in headlights and lights reflect visible light.
Surfaces should protect metals from corrosion,
make plastics scratchproof, on one occasion
wettable, on other not easily wettable, or even
protect the inside of plastic casings against
electromagnetic fields. Medical implants must
be biocompatible on the surface andwatches,
jewellery and many other everyday objects
simply need their surface to look good.
Microelectronics and high-grade data carriers
would be unthinkable without such thin films
technologies. Plasma-based surface treatment
technology makes an important contribution in
all these fields. In many cases, it offers the only
possibility to make a decisive contribution to
improving the product. The range of its applica-
tions means it really is a technology which spans
all areas.
kompakte Bauweisen. Gleichzeitig sind hohe
Qualittsansprche und Umweltschutzanforde-
rungen zu erfllen. Bei diesem komplexen
Anforderungsprofil geraten Werkstoffe schnell
an ihre Grenzen. Die heutige Werkstoff- und
Fertigungstechnik sttzt sich daher immer mehr
auf die Schlsselfunktionen von Oberflchen.
Die Oberflche machts!
Stndig steigende Anforderungen an die Leistungs-
fhigkeit von Produkten und zunehmender Wettbe-
werb verlangen, Grundwerkstoff und Oberflche
unabhngig voneinander zu optimieren. Bei der
Wahl des Grundswerkstoffes spielen beispielsweise
sein spezifisches Gewicht, seine Formbarkeit oder
etwa optische Transparenz und nicht zuletzt der
Preis eine entscheidende Rolle. Von der Oberflche
des Endprodukts wird mehr verlangt:
Bei Werkzeugen und hochbelasteten Maschinen-
bauteilen muss sie tribologischen Beanspruchungen
standhalten, bei Architekturglsern soll sie Wrme-
strahlen und in Scheinwerfern und Leuchten sicht-
bares Licht reflektieren.
elektromagnetische Felder abschirmen.
Medizinische Implantate mssen an der Oberflche
biokompatibel sein, und Uhren, Schmuck sowie viele
andere Gegenstnde des Alltags darf ihre Ober-
flche einfach nur verschnern. Mikroelektronik
und hochleistungsfhige Datentrger wren ohne
Schichttechniken nicht denkbar. Plasmageschtzte

Oberflchentechnik leistet auf all diesen Feldern
einen wichtigen Beitrag. In vielen Fllen bietet sie
die einzige Mglichkeit zur entscheidenden Produkt-
verbesserung.
alten Griechen fndig. Plasma das griechische
Wort fr Gebilde bezeichnet seitdem elektrisch
leitende Gase.
Ionen. Ihnen verdanken Plasmen ihre hochreaktiven
Eigenschaften und die Leuchterscheinungen, die sie
inzwischen zu einem vielseitig einsetzbaren Werk-
zeug quer durch alle industriellen Anwendungs-
felder machen.
Wie man Plasmen erzeugt, demonstrieren uns seit
jeher Blitze elektronische Entladungen in der
Gasatmosphre der Erde. Beim technischen Einsatz
von Gasentladungen soll es natrlich nicht immer
so hei hergehen.
geringer Wrmeentwicklung. Heute hat die Indu-
strie gelernt, das Werkzeug Plasma wirkungsvoll zur
But what is plasma?
At the end of the 1920s scientists were looking
for a name for a fascinating medium which did
not quite fit in the traditional scheme of traditional
aggregate states, solid, liquid or gaseous. As so
often, they found one in the language of the
ancient Greeks. Plasma the Greek word for
a moulded thing, since describes electrically
conductive gasses. In contrast to normal gases,
they not only consist of neutral atoms and
molecules, but essentially of negative and
positive charge carriers such as electrons and
excited ions. It is due to this, that plasmas are
highly reactive and luminescent, which has
made them have diverse applications as a tool
throughout all fields of industrial applications.
How plasmas are created has been shown
since time immemorial by lightning, electrical
discharges in the Earths atmosphere. In the
technical application of gas discharges, things
should of course not always be so hot. In the
most salient example, the neon tube, we have
for a long time been using the luminescence of
plasmas with little heat development. Today,
industry has learnt to use the tool, plasma,
effectively for changing surface properties.
With cold low-pressure plasmas, even tempera-
ture-sensitive plastics can be easily treated.
Depending on the choice of process gases, the
highly reactive effect of plasmas can be used for
cleaning, grease removal and erosion as well as
for precipitation of functional, thin layers. An
overview of the structure of plants and processes

Good economic conditions for modern coating systems
Due to the ongoing expansion of the fields of
application, the sector in Germany has in recent
years been developing at double digit growth
rates. Also for the upcoming years a further
growth of the market potential and high investment
in this technology can be well expected.
The total order value in industrial surface treat-
ment technology grow 14% in 2006 after the
boom year 2005. VDMA Surface Treatment
estimates the total turnover of the branch
between 1 or 1.2 billion Euro for machinery
components and coating services.
Economic driver in 2006 has been the domestic
market with a growth of 23%. The foreign trade
of the branch could grow 5% in 2006 after very
high increase rates in 2005. Large Area-applications
account for 47% of the total order quantity in
2006.

Many users who want to utilise the benefits and
capabilities of modern thin films, favour at first
the surface treatment of their products by job
coaters. This is offered also by competent
machinery and plant manufacturers of this
branch. According to a survey of VDMA the
branch accounted for round about 50% of its
total turnover in the plant and machinery sector
in 2006. Job coating and other services account
for approximately 1/3, whereas the business
with components covers around 17% of the total
turnover. Especially the segment of job coating
could significantly grow in 2006.

auerdem verstrkt Einzug in Herstellung dekorati-
ver Schichten. Auch aus der Automobilindustrie sind
die Verfahren der industriellen Plasma-Oberflchen-
technik nicht mehr wegzudenken.
Schonung der Umwelt bringt Vorteile
Fortschritte bei der Verfahrensentwicklung und
neue Schichtsysteme haben das Plasma vorange-
bracht.
Abwasserproblematik beitragen.
Protection of the environmentbrings advantages
Progress in process development and new thin
films systems have made plasma more impor-
tant. Compared to the galvanic processes, they
have not only gained ground by their own efforts.
Further development of environment protection
regulations in particular has supported and
promoted plasma surface treatment technology,
since these regulations have made established
processes such as galvanising or even many
areas of paint technology more expensive.
Accordingly, cost advantages result from less
environmental damage from plasma processes,
which only take place in an electrically charged
atmosphere and thus contribute neither to
waste or waste water problems.

12 EINFHRUNG/INTRODUCTION
Anwendungspotenziale in verschie-densten Industriebereichen
dungsfeldern. Beim Automobil sind dnne Schich-
ten in unterschiedlichsten Funktionen realisiert.
Dazu gehrt z. B. der Verschleischutz hochbelaste-
ter Bauteile von Verbrennungsmotoren, Getrieben,
elektrischen Antriebselementen, Pumpen, Gestn-
gen und Fahrwerksteilen.
Reflektoren in Beleuchtungseinrichtungen erhalten
hochwertige Verspiegelungen. Kunststoffteile im
Innenraum bentigen kratzfeste Beschichtungen,
und an der Karosserie eingesetzte Kunststoffe
erhalten durch Plasmaaktivierung eine wirksame
Haftvermittlung fr die Lackierung.
Auch in der Medizin nehmen moderne Beschich-
tungstechniken stetig an Bedeutung zu. Durch die
Aufbringung biokompatibler Schichten auf Implan-
taten knnen deren Grundwerkstoffe eher auf ihre
mechanische Beanspruchung abgestimmt werden,
anstatt gleichzeitig gewebefreundlich sein zu
mssen. Fr komplexe Kathetertechnik und Systeme
fr minimal-invasive Operationsmethoden sind
reibungsmindernde Schichten notwendig. Die
Oberflcheneigenschaften aller Arten von in der
Medizin eingesetzten Behltnissen fr Flssigkeiten
knnen beliebig hydrophil oder hydrophob ausge-
stattet werden.
Neben den genannten Beispielen existiert eine Flle
weiterer potenzieller Anwenderbranchen mit zum
Teil erheblichem Bedarf an Wissenstransfer. Eine
Analyse der bisherigen Nutzungstiefe durchge-
fhrt durch die Arbeitsgruppe Industrielle Plasma-
Oberflchentechnik im VDMA wird einen syste-
matischen Dialog mit den Anbietern ermglichen.
Vorrangige Zielgruppen werden Maschinenbau-
branchen und die Automobilzulieferkette sein.
Applications potential in varioussectors of industry
There are promising prospects for
the new processes in a whole series of fields of
applications. In the car, there are thin coatings in
the most diverse functions. This includes, for
example, wear protection of highly stressed
components of combustion engines, gears,
electrical drive elements, pumps, linkages and
chassis components. Reflector in lighting sys-
tems have high quality reflective coats. Plastic
parts in the interior require scratchproof coat-
ings and plastics used on bodywork obtain
effective adhesion capacity for paint by means of
plasma activation.
In medicine, too, modern coating technologies
are steadily gaining importance. By applying
biocompatible layers on implants, their base
materials can be more geared to mechanical
stress instead of needing to be tissue-friendly at
the same time. For complex catheter technology
and systems for minimally invasive operation
methods, friction-reducing coatings are required.
The surface properties of all types of liquid
containers employed in medicine can, as necessary,
be provided hydrophilic or hydrophobic.
Apart from the examples mentioned, there are
many more potential applications with, to some
extent, considerable demand for transfer of
knowledge. Analysis of the extent of use, under-
taken by the working group, Industrial Plasma
Surface Treatment in VDMA, will allow systematic
dialogue with suppliers. The preferred target
groups will be machine constructions and auto-
motive supplier chain sectors.

INTRODUCTION/EINFHRUNG 13
Herausforderungen fr die Zukunft
Bei den Schlsseltechnologien von heute und der
Zukunft spielen die Funktionen dnner Schichten
und damit Plasmaprozesse ebenfalls eine entschei-
dende Rolle. In der Kommunikations- und Informati-
onstechnik betrifft es die Weiterentwicklung von
Flachbildschirmen, die Kapazittserhhung von
Speichermedien und selbstverstndlich die weitere
Miniaturisierung elektronischer Bauelemente und
Strukturen. In der Energietechnik kommen z. B.
Solarzelle und auch Brennstoffzelle nicht ohne
spezifische Oberflchenfunktionen ihrer wichtigen
Konstruktionselemente aus.
Die Nachfrage nach schnelleren Prozessen wird
auch fr die Anbieter Industrieller Plasma-Ober-
flchentechnik eine der wesentlichen technologi-
schen Herausforderungen sein. Um das Tempo von
Produktionsverfahren erhhen zu knnen, muss die
Oberflchentechnik zurck in die laufende Ferti-
gung. Unter der Voraussetzung hoher Stckzahlen
sind schnelle Einzelteilbeschichtungen wie in der
CD-Herstellung realisiert anstatt Batch-Verfah-
Challenges for the future
In todays and future key technologies, the
function of thin coatings and thus plasma
processes also play a deciding role. In commu-
nications and information technology, it affects
the further development of flat screens, increas-
ing the capacity of storage media and of course
the further miniaturisation of electronic compo-
nents and structures. In power engineering, for
example, solar cells and even fuel cells cannot
do without specific surface functions of their
important structural elements. The demand
for more rapid processes will also be one of
the main challenges for suppliers of Industrial
Plasma Surface Treatment. To speed up produc-
tion processes, surface treatment must return
continuous production. Provided the numbers
of units are high, rapid single part coatings,
as realised in CD manufacture, instead of batch
processes, may be a possibility for integration
into the production chain. In job coating too,
automated processes and tightening up logistics
help to save costs and speed things up.

over the past several years. Coatings increase
the performance of tools for virtually all cutting
applications and make the economical machining

Individual Coatings for Top Performance
For some applications, not only metals need to
be coated, but also non-conductive materials like
ceramic, or non-conductive coating materials are
required. CemeCon also offers the right solutions
in cases like these. On request the coating expert
will develop individual coatings together with
the customer that are optimally customized to
the respective applications.
The heart of the CemeCon system technology
and the source of the individually adaptable
coating solutions is the proven CC800/9 coating
system. It offers all variations from the smallest
production all the way up to complete production
lines. And with the CC800/9 JET, CemeCon
offers an inexpensive entry-level product for
in-house coating. Economical coating is possible
even with small filling quantities. And thanks to
fast, low-cost retrofitting of the coating chambers,
it can also be upgraded to the XL format.
flchengten und extremer Haltbarkeit.
Fr manche Anwendungen mssen nicht nur
Hartmetalle und HSS beschichtet werden, son-
dern auch nichtleitende Materialien wie Keramik
und Cermets. Auf der anderen Seite sind aber
auch nichtleitende Schichtwerkstoffe gefragt. In
solchen Fllen bietet CemeCon ebenfalls die pas-
senden Lsungen an. Auf Wunsch entwickelt das
Unternehmen individuelle Beschichtungen zu-
sammen mit dem Kunden optimal mage-
schneidert auf die jeweiligen Applikationen und
Werkzeuge.
Herzstck der CemeCon-Anlagentechnik und
Quelle der individuell anpassbaren Beschichtungs-
lsungen ist die bewhrte Beschichtungsanlage
CC800/9. Sie bietet alle Variationen von der
Kleinstproduktion bis hin zur kompletten Ferti-
gungslinie. Mit der CC800/9 JET bietet CemeCon
den kostengnstigen Einstieg fr die Inhousebe-
schichtung: Selbst bei kleinen Fllmengen ist
damit wirtschaftliches Beschichten mglich und
durch schnelle und kostengnstige Upgrades der
Beschichtungskammern lsst sie sich auch zu einer
greren Beschichtungsanlage aufrsten.

This success is based on the diadur coating
system as well as the continuing revolution at
the process technology used for its production.
Depending on the technical demands of the
coating system and the case of operation a
modified RF- or a newly developed DC-Pulse-
Plasma procedure is applied.
Besides an innovative process technology modern
control systems are a major importance for coating
results with high quality and repeatability. The
automatic monitoring of the operating procedure

32 NACHWORT/EPILOGUE
Seit 1994 ist die Industrielle Plasma-Oberflchen-
technik als Querschnitts- und Schlsseltechnologie
fester Bestandteil der Fachabteilung Oberflchen-
technik.
Fachabteilung Oberflchentechnik engagierten
Firmen auf die Industrielle Plasma-Oberflchen-
technik.
In der Fachabteilung Oberflchentechnik sind
77 Hersteller bzw. Anbieter von Komponenten,
Systemen und Anlagen der Oberflchentechnik
organisiert. Die Branche ist insgesamt stark
mittelstndisch geprgt bei einigen wenigen
im Groanlagenbau dominierenden System-
anbietern.
Den thematischen Schwerpunkt der Fachabteilung
bildet der gesamte Bereich der handwerklichen
und industriellen Lackiertechnik, einschlielich
Vorbehandlung und Trocknung.
Die VDMA Industrielle Plasma-Oberflchentechnik
ist als verbandlich organisierte Interessenvertretung
der Branche seit 1995 etabliert. Die Aktivitten
sind auf die Interessen der Industrie ausgerichtet.
Im Vordergrund steht dabei die Erschlieung
neuer Kundenbrachen fr bereits etablierte und
erfolgreich in der industriellen Produktion einge-
setzte Verfahren. Zur Frderung der Industriellen
Plasma-Oberflchentechnik ist der Arbeitskreis
mit Forschungsvereinigungen, Foren und Fach-
verbnden des VDMA vernetzt. Mit gemeinschaft-
licher ffentlichkeitsarbeit hat der Arbeitskreis
die Branchenidentitt der Industriellen Plasma-
Oberflchentechnik erfolgreich aufgebaut und
die Wahrnehmung in Industrie, Forschung und
Politik erreicht.
Since 1994, Industrial Plasma-Surface Treatment
Technology, as a key technology spanning all
sectors, has been a fixed part of the specialist
category, Surface Treatment. About a fourth of
companies involved in the specialised category,
Surface Treatment, are involved in Industrial
Plasma-Surface Treatment.
In the Surface Treatment Group, 77 manufacturers
of suppliers of components, systems and plants
are organised. Altogether, the sector is
characterised to a great degree by medium-sized
businesses and in a few cases system suppliers
dominate in major plant constructions.
The VDMA Plasma-Surface Technology section,
which is well-established in the branch since
1995, is an associated organised representation
of interests. The activities are focussed on the
interests of the industry. In the foreground, the
developing of new branches of trade is centred for
already successfully inserted procedures within
the industrial production. For advancement of
Industrial Plasma-Surface Technology the
working group is connected with research
aggregations, forums and other specialised
departments within the VDMA. Through
common public relations the working group has
established the identity of Industrial Plasma-
Surface Technology successfully and has reached
the perception in industry, policy and research.
