Dear participants of the intensive course “German in the region of Porsche and Schiller”,

We are glad about your decision of taking the language course here at the Universität Hohenheim. The course’s name is our game. You will not only intensively expand your German knowledge but you will also get to know much about the Stuttgart region, which is fondly called the “Ländle”. Stuttgart is located in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Besides its beautiful countryside it is also well-known for poets and thinkers such as Friedrich Schiller or Hermann Hesse. Furthermore, the area around Stuttgart is one of the most powerful economic regions in Germany where many famous enterprises, such as Porsche, Bosch, Hugo Boss, Stihl or Daimler are located. You will get to know all these specialties during the course lessons as well as in the range of the social program that we have prepared for you in addition to the modernly planned language courses. In this program you will find important information about the language course, the social program and about the organization of your arrival as well as your departure. Course program

The intensive course “German in the region of Porsche and Schiller” is especially for students of all branches of studies as well as for other interested persons who would like to improve their German skills. According to their previous knowledge, the course participants are taught in different groups. The group size of 20 people at a maximum offers the possibility for intensive studying as well as a broad and individual support. The course language is German. The lessons offered comprise ca. 60 hours of class and they aim to systematically improve skills like listening, talking, reading and writing. In the range of the particular levels and integrated language classes, we practice these disciplines. In addition, you have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. The course is supplemented by seminars, excursions and other activities. This is why the intensive language course “German in the region of Porsche and Schiller” offers a good preparation for a longer study visit in Germany. Additionally, the participants have the possibility to practice self-reliantly in the modernly equipped Mediatheque. At the desks, you can also listen to German music and watch German movies. At the end of the course, we offer the possibility to take part in a final exam. The results of this exam will be given in a certificate.

Course contents The courses are being offered in the range of five separate groups (“grey”, “blue”, “green”, “yellow” and “red”). Previous to the course’s start there will be an obligatory placement test (not for absolute beginners). With regard to content and linguistics, the participants have the possiblitiy to decide together with the lecturers on the course’s topics. The integrated language work on five mornings per week aims to train the linguistic skills referring to the certain levels. By means of this method, there is no acute separation of the several areas but they are rather closely connected. To let you know what we expect, here are some hints on the language courses’ elements: Somebody is proficient in a foreign language when he/she is able to talk uninhibitedly and discuss about current topics. This is to be practiced in conversations and role plays. Topics of society, culture, and politics help to strengthen the newly learned vocabulary. Besides the free talking, articulation and pronunciation of words and sentences are important, too, to be able to get one’s ideas in a foreign language across and, especially, to be understood by others. This is why phonetic exercises are also part of the course. The participants’ listening comprehension is to be trained in such a range to enable them – depending on the course’s level – to follow a conversation in German. We will practice this by working with listening texts, videos, as well as with dialogue and role plays. Another important course element is the thematical work with written texts. Alongside to the practice of reading skills (reading strategies, text comprehension in general) the thematical work provides a basis for the vocabulary expansion and it can be the starting point for grammar exercises. The course offers numerous chances of writing exercises, which improve the writing skills and help to structure your thoughts. The exercises help to train spelling as well as grammar in an excellent way.

In the field of grammar, our goal is to solidify and expand the structures according to the particular levels. Specified vocabulary work helps to activate the existing lexicon and to learn new words in a thematical context. At the same time, the students will be familiarized with typical German idioms and their usage.

Tutorial “language games”

For the groups “grey” and “blue”, an afternoon tutorial will be offered twice a week (on Tuesdays and Thursdays). In this tutorial, the participants will deepen their knowledge of German language with entertaining teaching methods such as games.

Seminar “Regionale Landeskunde”

This seminar (August 10) will not take place in the classroom, but outside. During a walk, we will get to know some hidden but nevertheless very attractive aspects of Stuttgart as for example the cable car and the typical “Stäffele” (small and steppy stairs) which will lead us to beautiful viewpoints. In addition, we will tell you some small and funny histories about Stuttgart and the Swabian mentality.

Mediatheque

The Language Center’s public Mediatheque offers the possibility for selfstudies by using the books, audio and video cassettes, DVDs and CD-Roms. The teaching materials can be used on modern audio, video and computer workstations, and help to improve your knowledge. During the first half of the course, you will get an introduction with information on all facilities. You can use the computers in the Mediatheque for e-mail service and internet reserach, too.

Final examination

The final exam takes place on Monday of the course’s last week (August 23). It will consist of: 1.) Listening comprehension (duration: approx. 20 minutes) 2.) Grammar test (duration: approx. 20 minutes) 3.) Reading comprehension (duration: approx. 20 minutes) 4.) Text production/ writing (duration:approx.30-40 minutes) The written exam’s grade consists of the above mentioned four parts and counts 50 % of the course’s overall grade. The oral exam’s grade counts another 50 % and will already be made during the lessons (presentation as well as active participation during the classes or one-to-one interview respectively). There will be no separate oral exam at the end of the course. The exam’s level of difficulty relates to the level of the particular course group, mid level B 1/2, for example. In the case of an absence of more than 12 teaching units (45 minutes each) a certificate cannot be issued! If you succeed in doing the course, you will get 4 ECTS credits for it (which is important for exchange students!). For regular presence in the afternoon classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, you will receive 1 extra ECTS credit. Proportional credits cannot be issued. The course project is not part of the exam. After having successfully passed the final exam, the participants will get a certificate confirming their performance. IMPORTANT: During the first week of courses, you will get detailed information about the exam as well as about the calculation of the final grade.

Social program

Welcome dinner On Monday, August 2nd from 7 pm, there will be a welcome dinner of a typical Swabian specialty. Here, you can get to know other participants, teachers, assistants, and organizers. We will meet in the ground floor of the Euro-Forum.

Information session(s) and beginning of classes

On Tuesday, August 3rd at 8:15 am, we will give you more important information and answers to questions such as “How can we sign up for excursions?” or “What about the internet in the dormitories?” This information session will take place in the basement of the Euro-Forum (and will also be held on August 9th and August 16th at 8.30 am to give an overview of the upcoming week). Afterwards, the language classes will begin at 9 am in the lecture rooms.

Movie nights

On all three Tuesdays, we will offer German motion pictures in the basement of the Euro-Forum. In the first week, you can watch the German comedy “Keinohrhasen”. Information on the second movie is to be announced at our information board. In the third week, it is the participants who can choose one movie out of three. Most of the current productions offer English subtitles as well. Further information about the movies as well as the timetable can be found on the information board.

Guided tour of Stuttgart On Wednesday afternoon, August 4th we will do a guided tour of Stuttgart’s city center. We will meet at 1.30 pm at the Euro-Forum.

Bar-hopping On Friday, August 6th, we will offer a bar-hopping tour of the city center. This is a great opportunity to get to know Stuttgart’s night life. Full particulars will be displayed on the information board.

International Dinner

A traditional highlight in the range of the German intensive course is the international dinner which will take place on Monday, August 9th (7 pm). It offers a great opportunity to get to know more about the other participants’ cultural and culinary background. On this evening, each student/country will cook and present a typical national dish and then share it with the others. Small cultural impressions (such as songs, pictures…) of your home countries will make the evening even more interesting and vivid.

Visit of the Mercedes Benz Museum On Wednesday, August 11th, we will visit the probably most fascinating museum of Stuttgart. Because of its impressing architecture, it not only for car fans is very interesting. By means of multilingual audio guides you will learn about the history of Mercedes and you can gaze at the brand’s spectacular exemplars.

Excursion to Heidelberg This trip will take place on Saturday, August 14th and will lead us to the well-known university city of Heidelberg. After a guided tour of the city and the Heidelberg Castle, you will have enough time at free disposal. You will find registration lists on the information board.

Excursions in the third week Program 1 (in German): brewery and Weißenhof settlement

Program 2 (in English): state gallery and champagne producer

For the third week, we will have two programs (one in English, one in German), and you can choose from one of them by signing up in the second week. Program 1 (in German): On Wednesday, August 18th, we’ll visit one of the two big breweries in Stuttgart (“Stuttgarter Hofbräu”). It’s possible to follow the complete process of beer production and after the tour, there will be a small lunch and you can taste all of the beers, of course. On Friday, August 20th, we’ll visit the architectonically interesting “Weißenhof settlement” in the North of Stuttgart. Program 2 (in English): On Wednesday, August 18th, we will visit the State Gallery and the recently opened pig museum (which includes a beer garden). On Friday, August 20th, you can join us on the guided tour through Germany’s oldest champagne producer in the historical city of Esslingen which is close to Stuttgart.

Field trip to Tübingen

On Saturday, August 21st, we will visit Tübingen. Tübingen’s silhouette is shaped by small steps, narrow alleys and pointed gables. We’ll also take a boat trip in the famous “Stcherkahn” – the boat exclusive to Tübingen navigated by a long wooden pole. There will be lists for registration at the information board.

Farewell Party

On Tuesday, August 24th, the German intensive course will end with a final party. At the beginning, the several groups will present their (hopefully creative and funny) project works on the topics “car city Stuttgart“ and “Schiller“ and subsequently, the students will receive their certificates. Together with many recently-gained friends and great impressions, we will have sparkling wine, pizza and will listen to music to let the course end.

Anyone who, on the leisure time during the weekends, does not only want to have a rest from the weekdays but wants to go in for something, will have unlimited numbers of possibilities what to do in Stuttgart (please see below). In the Mediatheque, you will find several pieces of information as well as the current cultural of Stuttgart. Additionally, you can get further information on leisure activities and sites in the course office.

Public transport

You can reach Stuttgart city center within 30 minutes by public transport. There are several possibilities to get there. The central exit: Schlossplatz or Hauptbahnhof (main station). 1.) Stop Universität Hohenheim

Food and drink

Each participant is responsible for his/ her own food. In the students’ dorms you have the possibility to prepare small meals. During the days of class (Mo-Fri) the Mensa offers cheap lunch (approx. 3 EUR). Please see the current menu on: http://www.studentenwerk-hohenheim.de (Mensa opening hours: Mo-Thu: 11.15 am -2.15 pm, Fri: 11.15 am - 1.45 pm).

The Cafeteria and the kiosk (opposite the main entrance of the Euro-Forum) offer small snacks.

Shopping

There is a grocery store close to the Uni, opposite the U-Bahn stop “Plieningen”. There are more shops in the immediate surroundings (Birkach, Plieningen) as well as in Stuttgart city center.

The post office as well as the “BW-Bank” are located at the U-Bahn stop “Plieningen”. Furthermore, there is an ATM at the Mensa’s side entrance.

Information board IMPORTANT: there is a huge information board on the Euro-Forum’s second floor. This board will daily be updated and will offer information on the events and possible changes of the program. The board may also be used for information from students.

Photocopier

You will need a Copy-Card to be able to make copies at the Uni Hohenheim. The Card costs 5,- EUR and can be bought in the Bio-Building as well as in the university libraries. One Copy-Card comprises 185 copies. There are photocopiers in the Bio-Building and in both libraries. There is a private Copy-Shop in the row of shops at Fruwirthstraße 26. For legal reasons it is not allowed to copy materials from the Mediatheque.

Sports Also during the semester break, Uni Hohenheim offers a variety of sports. On the sports information desks at the ASta-office you can get further information on the specific types of sports, on the sports grounds, and on the individual dates
