Dear QC Alumni, Parents, and Friends,I’m pleased to share with you our second Annual Report. We had a great year! We engaged more students than ever before, increased our staff, created a new signature program called the Council of Jewish Leaders, and much more. We cannot fit everything into this report, so for more please visit our brand new website, www.qchillel.org.Our programming for the campus Jewish community this year has been greatly influenced by the work of Gidi Grinstein. In his book, Flexigidity: The Secret of Jewish Adaptability, and the Challenge and Opportunity Facing Israel, Grinstein identifies four Jewish narratives:

∙ Peoplehood Despite their diversity, the Jews constitute a single people. They relate to each other as family with a shared history and destiny, bound by mutual responsibility. Members are either born into the family or choose to join it, claiming historical or by-choice belonging to the line of Abraham.

∙ Nationhood The Jewish People emanated from the Land of Israel and has the right to self-determination in its own land, known today as Israel.

∙ Service A primary value in Jewish life is tikkun olam—working to make the world a better place through activities such as: community service; care for the ill, aging, or disabled; protection of the environment; and caring for those in need both inside and outside the Jewish community.

∙ Religion The Jewish People—and every Jew—is in a covenantal relationship with God. Our obligations, activities, and beliefs associated with Judaism are in service of that relationship. Hillel is a Peoplehood organization. We welcome all Jews who self-identify with the Jewish people and seek to promote the well-being of each of its members across ethnic, religious, economic, geographic, or political lines. Hillel aims to provide meaningful Jewish experiences that strengthen their Jewish identity. Our students (and Jews more broadly) certainly represent each of these narratives. we strive each day to model a “big tent” Judaism that allows each narrative and its followers to flourish on their own, while at the same time contributing to the vitality of the Jewish people as a whole.Thanks to all who have supported us this year—we succeed only as a team.  Student LifeEvery Jewish narrative is welcome at Hillel. Bingo Night and Persian Formal celebrate Jewish Peoplehood in a social setting. Shabbat and holiday celebrations serve both residents and commuters. Daily minyanim and diverse learning opportunities keep students exploring their Jewish heritage. Sephardi and Mizrahi student life is growing, with expanded support for Bukharian and Persian students. Challah for Hunger connects our students with those in need whom they can help. Our cross-cultural collaborations with the wider campus community contribute to a constructive and peaceful QC environment. There’s Birthright, internships, ping pong, and pool!   Cultivating LeadershipAt Hillel, emerging leaders get experience that helps them grow as leaders and acquire leadership skills that will last a lifetime. Our staff members work with student leaders around the clock to create the best programs. Our Council of Jewish Leaders gathers leaders of all student groups to share information and design the community's future. Hillel internships connect students to the broader Jewish and civic communities. Special conferences and travel opportunities with Hillel expand students' horizons. Migdalim interns engage students in conversations about what Israel means to them. Many of the next leaders of the New York Jewish community are here at Queens College, and Hillel prepares them to lead.

 Jewish LearningTo be meaningful, Jewish experiences must be authentic. Hillel offers opportunities for students to engage in Jewish learning that furthers their own “Jewish journeys.” Our on-staff educators join with teachers from Mechon Hadar, the Shalom Hartman Institute, Kevah, and other top organizations to offer a wide range of Jewish learning opportunities. The Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus ( JLIC) at QC, a project of the Orthodox Union in partnership with Hillel, headlines our service to the Orthodox community (second largest on campus in the nation), offering many coed and single-sex shi’urim, haburot, havrutot, and programs. HaMidrasha @ QC, our new, high-level Jewish learning program, offers serious daily Jewish study for women as an integrated part of their college experience.

 CommunityThe Jewish population at Queens College continues to grow, commuters and residents alike. We served over 1,500 of our 4,000 Jewish students this year, 400 of whom live in The Summit dormitory or in nearby apartments. The others are commuters living in Queens, the Five Towns, New Jersey, Great Neck, and other parts of our metropolitan area. Our students represent Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrahi; Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform; Persian, Bukharian, and other Jewish ethnic, religious, and cultural groups. We offer activities during Shabbat and holidays (including meals), weekday evenings, Club Hours, and in between classes. Our goal is to accommodate every student's interest on their schedule!
